Im not sure about Navy boot camp, but in the Army, it was forbidden to eat the cake, ice cream, pastries, etc that were in the mess hall. IF someone were to eat one of these items, the drill sergeants would "work the calories off us". So I would suggest that you eat all the good food that you can and enjoy your freedom while you have it. You should also study the rank structure of the Navy, and know what ranks go in what positions. For example: who is your CO and what is his/her rank? ( you will probably be asked these questions while your there). Oh and learn how to make your bed Quickly, and make sure that it's nice (ie 45 degree hospital corners on all four sides, sheets are tight, etc). And one last bit of advice: when you are at boot camp, TAKE SHOWERS!. Just about every one I know who has gone to any military boot camp/basic training, knew of at least one person who refused to take showers!:disgust: DO NOT BE THAT PERSON.

Of course it changes you. That's the whole point... to break you down, then build you up again.

If you've ever seen battle, you'd know why the training is like that.

Well it's been 18 years since I was at boot camp but some things hold true.

1. Do exactly what you are told to do,when you are told to do it, as fast as you can.
2. It's all about teamwork. The main theme behind boot camp is teamwork, teamwork, teamwork. Have fun at Battle stations. That wasn't there when I went through and it looks like fun.

BTW what's your follow on assignment?

Can't eat ice cream, cookies, cake, HAHAHAHAH, you have got to be kidding me what were you in fat camp? Wouldn't take a shower, you obviously had WAY too much freedom, we were asked to do nothing at Paris Island, we were TOLD everything to do. All we drank for the 13 weeks we were there was water and milk, no sugar cereal or sweets at all, no phone calls, TV, weekends off like the other so called boot camps, and god forbid we had no choice in what we can and can't do. Navy boot camp is lots of learning tradition and Navy general knowledge, don't sweat it, do what you are told and you will do fine.

I was there almost the same time as Dave was it looks like, in fall of '84 for me. (graduation on pearl harbor day, Dec 7th)

If you want to get ahead of the game a bit, learn your general orders by heart so you know them before you get there.

Like Dave said, it is all about teamwork. You will spend a LOT of time on the grinder learning how to march but its kind of hard to practice that, LOL.

Have your hair cut short but not shaved when you first get there. The first couple of days are taken up getting all your shots and uniforms, and you may wait for all the people to fill up your company if you are there first.

Bring a good pair of running shoes (BROKEN IN) because you can use them for some of the training. As long as they have to be broken in, start jogging now.

Hmmmmm, you could always try and learn what ranks are by the insignias, that is covered in school while you are there. (lots of class time, try not to sleep)

Oh, and you may be asked what the 12th general order is. :D

12. Not to forget the other 11.

Somebody WILL ask you that, trust me.

well, no, but it isn't total hell or anything

are you in decent shape? can you run 2 miles without walking? if not, start running/jogging at least one mile a day
do you have trouble doing situps/pushups? if so, do some each morning

but, navy boot camp is more about learning discipline and team work than physical stuff (although they will make you do physical stuff for punishment)

ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND LISTEN TO YOUR COMPANY COMMANDERS

if you do those two things, you will be fine :)

have fun! Great Lakes in the summer sucks, as i understand it (but i went to boot camp in Orlando, not GL)

No way... One of my best friends, Mark, went into the Navy in September of last year. He went through 9 weeks of boot, where he could do a whopping 30 pushups in two minutes or some really really crappy stat. Anyway, now he snaps off something like 70 in one minute. :Q In about nine months, he's gone from scrawny little brat to hard-ass bastard. He's in school, too. He's going into Electronic Warfare, so he's gonna be one of those stupid nerds sitting behind a desk in a black room looking at radar and radio, decoding, breaking code, encoding, ship masking from incoming hostiles, etc.

:D He's come along quit admirably!

I can't imaging what he would be like if he joined the Marines :Q :Q

Oh, and boot camp is for everybody, not just Navy. It's not split up into branches anymore (if it ever was). My friend Mark was in with people who split off into the AirForce and the Navy.

Every service runs their own boot camps. There are no Air Force at Great Lakes going through boot camp. Just Navy.

It wasn't a pissing contest. He went to Marine boot camp at Paris Island so he wins the argument. You didn't hear me arguing with him.

Hmm... strange. Cuz, as far as I know, they're merged together depending on where you go.

I wasn't singling anyone out, just poking fun at the fact that 3 branches' boot camps have been mentioned in this short thread and 2 different jarheads jokingly commented about how USMC boot camp is tougher. I'm sure it is tougher. Just thought it was funny.
