Boot Camp Installation Question

I was helping a friend install WinXP through Boot Camp (OS 10.5). Boot Camp specifies WinXP SP2 or newer, but what if the only (legal) version of XP you have is pre SP2? Could my friend use his older version of WinXP and slipstream SP2 and install that way?
 
Yes, he would have to do that. Really, the key is what matters, not the disk.
