Boosting/Upgrading Wireless network signal

Currently I have a laptop which is used for a home office about 150ft away above a garage. With the interference of walls, windows and what have you the signal has only been "medium to weak" ever since I set it up about 20 months ago. Is there any hardware that could cheaply and effectivley improve the signal and speed of my laptops reception?
