Boosting Post Counts?

Please explain to me the psychology behind posting garbage posts to increase post counts. Doesn't such an act make one realize the truly pathetic state of their life? Now, you may say that this post is just such an example of one, but before you do, go look and see how few posts I've made in my time here. Considering the thread regarding the abolition of post counts, its a legitimate question.

why did you need to create a new thread for this when there are others?

I once set up a bulletin board, and this annoying guy I know signed up, so I modified the forum software to decrement his postcount every time he posted.
