Boomer Esiason rips Mets infielder for taking paternity leave

Wow, I watched this and heard this and thought what a bunch of knuckleheads. Sorry but my SO was very weak and fatigued after giving birth and needed help with our newborn, so I took off 3 weeks to help out with our newborn and give her much needed help. It was one of our most joyous events. I really think this is selfish and absurd.

This seems almost too silly to bother indulging, but, well, here: New York sports-talk radio hosts Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason ripped Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy for using his collectively bargained right to paternity leave to be with his wife in Florida after the birth of his son.

Esiason, a former NFL quarterback, argues that Murphy and his wife should have scheduled a Caesarian-section birth before the season started, because, hey, why wouldn’t someone want to subject his wife and child to the increased risks inherent in that procedure on behalf of two games of Mets baseball?

Oh, that’s the other thing: Despite what the hosts suggest, baseball players can only take up to three games’ worth of paternity leave — not the two weeks they suggest. I learned that from Googling it, which took roughly seven seconds. But there’s no room for facts when it comes time to drub up some outrage.

Daniel Murphy has played in 317 games for the Mets over the past two seasons. Obviously he’s not shying away from the baseball field. If he somehow thinks the birth of his first child is more important than a couple of baseball games, it is absolutely his right to use the paternity leave that his union secured.

But then, I suppose, Boomer and Carton have the right to be angry about it, since finding stuff to get riled up about is an important part of what they do.

Heard this today, too. Absolutely ridiculous. Obviously it shows where certain priorities are. Completely shit attitudes.

What complete bullshit. Priorities: family first, everything else after. A sport/game, a job etc, all that crap would come miles behind the birth of my child and the welfare of my wife as far as I'm concerned. I think the people criticizing the guy are jackasses.

What's wrong with people? A guy has his first child and instead of congratulating him they rip on him for taking some time off (at the beginning of the season no less) to be with his new family?

A child's going to be around for years; how often do you get to play in a baseball game?

Oh, literally every day for 6 months? Well that's fucking idiotic then.

I like the part where he says he would demand his wife have a C section before the big game or season "because you know honey this pays our bills takes care of the health and well being of our children... ect. ect.." Even though she may not need a C section, and its far riskier, and she might want to have her child naturally....LOL

Not only is assisting your wife with giving birth to your child more important than playing baseball, it shouldn't be lost on us that it's playing baseball for the Mets. He could take the rest of the season off and I doubt anyone would notice.

My friend bought tickets to the Mets game tonight and invited me. Her pitch was "It's $5 ticket night, what a deal!" I told her that I've been to $5 ticket night many times, it's called from mid-July on.

And, you know, recovery time from a C-section is waaaaaaay longer than recovery time from a natural birth. My wife had an unplanned C-section for our first, and a VBAC for the second, and the difference was astounding. Up and walking and basically functional day 1 after baby #2. Versus the recovery from HAVING HER GUT SLICED OPEN for the first one.

Boomer is definitely a fucktard in this one. Wonder if he will stand by his idiocy or learn something out of all this.

Must be a slow news day when somebody has to criticize a guy for missing work to go see his first child being born..Jeez.

Esiason is the only guy who is on.....well his side. Even the most Neanderthal sport radio jock cliche dudes I've heard disagree with Boomer.

At this point Boomer is not even on Boomer's side. He made a dumb remark and the next day apologized.

My deep apologies to both Daniel and Tori Murphy for creating an intrusion into a very sacred and personal moment in their lives, and that’s the birth of their son, Noah. Daniel is the Mets’ second baseman, whose brief paternity leave led to a flippant and insensitive remark that I sincerely regret. (In the) meantime, I’m very grateful to my many friends over at the March of Dimes who graciously reached out and re-educated me that if a pregnancy is healthy, it is medically beneficial to let the labor begin on its own rather than to schedule a C-section for convenience. In fact, babies born just a few weeks early have double the risk of death compared to babies born after 39 full weeks of pregnancy. As their promotional campaign says, ‘Healthy babies are worth the wait.’ And as a proud father, I couldn’t agree more.

They are about the only program on free radio my wife and I listen to during the morning commute, needless to say she was pretty pissed at Boomer. The crazy thing is normally he's the calm rational guy who is never a dick on the show.

I imagine he has quite a few concussions to his name. Back then it was still the "walk it off you *ussy!!* attitude.
