Hey Guys,

I need your help picking out good sounding small speakers. They will be powered by a yamaha receiver. Smaller the better.. maybe slightly larger than the bose cubes.

price range under 400.

thanks

This is going to be paired up with a subwoofer, right?

Just 2 speakers for a $400 budget?

I have a section of small speaker alternatives in section 2.5 of the sticky thread.

i would suggest 200$ to 2 speakers, 200$ to subwoofer.

Small Speaker example
subwoofer example

Just realize that almost all "small" speakers will leave you with an empty lower-midrange even if you have a subwoofer. 100-220hz region will be very difficult for the small speakers to reproduce (not many subwoofer, if any, can do justice to this region without become very distracting (male voices come from sub, female voices from speakers etc.). Additionally, you will get beaming in the treble above 9khz (I believe) if its a 3" driver if it is unassisted by a tweeter.

If you can have something that is roughly 1 ft height, 6" width, 8" depth; then there are options in your price range that would allow for a much higher level of sound quality than you would ever get from a 3" speaker.

The speakers will be for the office of our CEO. All he cares about is for it to be small and sounds good (i know its tough). Before he had some 9 inch tall Sony bookshelf speakers with wire thin speaker cables powered by the plasma tv.
He wont want to have a sub because it would clutter his office. thanks for your help so far guys.
Yoyo i'll check out your thread and tiamat i'll consider those speakers.

Alex

So the 9 inch tall speakers were too big?

Would it be possible to wall mount the speakers to get them out of the way a bit and allow them to be a bit larger? (Mounted on the wall to the side of the plasma?)

Maybe you should ask him if he'd be willing to have a sub that he could stick in a corner of the room? If you can wall mount reasonably sized speakers, the subwoofer wouldn't need to be centrally located or anything, it could be under a desk or under a coat hook area or something 😛

Yeah, i'm with yoyo about perhaps wall-mounted speakers.

just over budget
quite a bit over budget
way over budget

Does you think your boss wouldnt mind a wallmounted standard bookshelf speaker? If you could wall mount these, you would be all set as you don't have to worry about needing "breathing room" behind the speaker for the port (which is non-existant in this model due to it being a sealed speaker design).

If you check out Stereophile in January, Robert Reina just reviewed a pair of very small bookshelf speakers (3" woofer with tweeter) and they are below your maximum cost. I don't remember what speakers they were (I read the magazine for free at Barnes & Noble), but they are self powered and might be good for your application. The same company makes a slightly large speaker for 100$ more which is still in your price range.

OP, you could try one of these out as well. They are front left, center, front right all in one sound bar.

Maybe two of them?!?! IDK how they hook up, I am guessing just one input and then x-overs inside.

I would assume 3 speaker wire terminals as its not an active unit. Its just LCR all in one box, probably with internal walls separating the 3.

Try connecting Bose MusicMonitor speakers to the receiver's line out. Or even directly to the source device (if there is only one).

Your $400 budget will give $1 change, nifty looking, and good bass with no subwoofer.

That's what I was thinking as well.

From the description of it though, for $170 you're only getting the equivalent of 1.5 pairs of these $34 speakers

Piano lacquer and Dr. Hsu's signature on the design probably cost the rest 😛
