I was talking to a friend tonight about what it's gonna be like to have a family... I started thinking about good books to read to my kids...

Gulliver's Travels
The Best Salesman in the World
Some Plato, probably.
Poetry.

What age? I kinda liked IT when I was a kid, but they might be too young for that :)

You can also try getting Truckers, Diggers and Wings (3 different books, same subject) by Terry Pratchett. They're written for kids, but with so much hidden jokes that only adults will be able to understand all, and it will still be fun for you as well.

Edit: Oh, and Calculus of course ;)

Haha, I considered it. Not that I want my kids to be geniuses or anything, but I'd like them to have better ideas in their minds than simply "I can do anything that I want to!" (insert other hippy crap here)

f-that my kids will be doing calculas before high school, they can be a hippie artist or poet if they want to be but they will have a lot of knowledge in a lot of subjects (not just science) before they come to that decision.

ohhh if they are gonna learn an instrument make sure they learn piano first every other instrument is easy comaprativly. once you get a bass clef goin on one hand and treble on the other, your kid wont care what key the music is in when he changes or trys another instrument.

I remember my Dad read a bunch of Mark Twain to me when I was young (early elementary or younger even). I loved it. Mark Twain is good because it is intelligent but even if the kids don't get everything he is saying they can still enjoy a good story, which he tells at the same time.

While you're at it, don't forget:

War and Peace
A Brief History of Time
The Satanic Verses
The Communist Manifesto
Homer's Illiad and The Oddysey
Dante's Inferno/The Divine Comedy

Remember, you don't want to get too deep, because you are talking about children, here. The above should be a good start..

The best, of course, is really the one whose stick comes out from under the bridge first when you play Pooh Sticks.

Brief History of Time, Iliad, Odyssey, and Dante are first on my list.

You think I'm joking.

Anything by Shel Silverstein (Where The Sidewalk Ends especially!). He writes some very good children's poems that are entertaining for Adults as well. These poems are especially good if you are a decent orator. I grew up with these poems and purchased all of his books for my daughter when she was four years old. She loves the poems and now tries to read them to me the way I read them to her (inflections and all).

Aesops fables gets a vote from me as well. Dr. Seuss is very good for beginners.

Satanic Verses aren't that great, no one would have ever heard of it if it weren't for the death threat.

Try reading the kid stuff from religious books once he or she gets old enough to think about it, so the kid can quickly distinguish between facts and religion.

I second Shel Silverstein (his children's writings only of course ;)). Some other books that just popped into mind are Where the Red Fern Grows, The Phantom Tollbooth, and To Kill a Mockingbird
