Books: Sprawl Trilogy

First time I read Neuromancer I thought: "What in god's name is going on?!" Seriously, I remember barely understanding the text. A few years later I read it again and it was more manageable, I guess because I was a more experience reader and knew what to expect. I've never read the other two.

Has anyone read this? Does it hold up to today's standards? It's a fictional trilogy from the 80s about hacking.

Its more about a fictional view of the future than hacking... From my perspective, its more cyberpunk that 'hacking.' For example, I would consider it in the same category as Neal Stephenson's Ice Crash... In terms of concept, I'm not sure that its all that different that Phillip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?

William Gibson, the author, is well known for turning a phrase. For example, he invented the term cyberspace.

If you're looking for something with a dystopian view of the future, you might enjoy Neuromancer. But if you're looking for something about hacking, you might not enjoy it so much.

For whatever its worth, I enjoyed it a great deal... I think that Gibson is immensely talented...

Never liked him. To me it's just a pile of random weirdness, as if he put together any barely-plausible idea that he could think of.
I like my SciFi more.. sombre.

I enjoyed it, but if I recall correctly the "hacking" part was a mixed bag if you actually know how to code.

Not quite down to the level of yelling "enhance!" on TV shows, but the idea that hackers would build "decks" / rigs that included a special high voltage line to fry their brain if they messed up is just silly. If I mistype my password on a website my computer does not explode. Only Captain Kirk can explode computers with logic puzzles.

Sounds somewhat interesting but I think I'll have to pass.

I want to find a good book to take my mind away. I keep wanting a good sci-fi fiction book but i have yet to find it.

Read the books by Neal Stephenson, particularly Anathem.

Anathem is a great book.

I wasn't overly impressed with Snow Crash, but maybe it took a little while for him to get his groove. It just seemed a little immature... not sure how else to describe it. The story was a good story, and I did enjoy reading it, but I enjoyed Neuromancer more.

Now, Cryptonomicon is a fantastic book. Reamde is also a very fun read.

And all of our deeds are simply dust...

I love Gibson and I'd encourage you to read his work.

I have never heard of the "Sprawl" but i suppose it sort of encompasses his world.

As far as hacking goes it depends upon your thoughts upon how things will go.

Sprawl is really sort of an officially unofficial (or is it unofficially official?) thing. It wasn't written as a trilogy, IIRC, instead, they are more or less three distinct stories that fall in the same story universe and may or may not demonstrate interconnectedness with the plots of the other books.

The first book is more standalone but the second and third books shares several characters and are tightly coupled.
