Books based on video games?

Back when I used to play Diablo 2 like it was my religion my instatiable zeal for everything Diablo had me go to the local Borders and pick up the Diablo novels. Anywho I read the first three and thought the first one was amazing, the second one sucked, and the third one was good but had nothing to do with the game. Does anyone else read books based on video games or am I just a freak?

The first and third Halo novels are pretty good (written by the same guy) while the second one (tells the story in the first game) isn't that good, at least doesn't compare at all to actually playing through the game (was written by someone else too). I was pretty surprised at how good they were actually (but I dig the Halo universe).

The Diablo book was horrible.

The Resident Evil books (from the first second and third games) are alright. Not great, but not bad mindless reading. Haven't read any of the others, but they're probably about the same. They don't compare to playing through the games (which incidentily could probably be played through as fast as you can read through the books), but they're not bad.

Haven't read any others.

So, most of them are pretty good mindless reads, definitely not anything stupendous, but are pretty entertaining. Not bad diversions at least, and every now and again its good to read something that you don't have to think too much about.

I've always wondered who bought those things. Now I guess I know. 😛

Same here. Novels based on something (game, movie, etc) generally suck (in my experience).

I agree. Personally, they're about equivalent to reading a romance novel (but then again, haven't ever read one of those, so don't know too much what they're like).

Its kinda like reading those goosebumps or other books like those when I was a kid. Entertaining but nothing good enough to have a conversation about.

I actually like the Halo concept with the halo planet thingy and all but the game just pisses me off...

The thing about the Diablo books is that you really need to be into the game for them to be any good. Otherwise they're just confusing and don't make sense and move fairly slowly.

Never knew there were any Resident Evil books out there, what are the stories based off of (game or movie)? I might give those a whirl, I really liked the games.

I've never heard of an actual book based off a movie.

you sound like a freak. but diablo is a good game. 😛

(actually, i never knew that there were novels based on video games. the concept is intriguing, but i have no time for reading lengthy materials.)

The Resident Evil books are based off of the games.

If you like the Halo concept but not the games, then I think you'll like the books. Personally I think they complement the story to the games pretty well. You get more background information about the Master Chief as well as other things that help to flesh out the world more.

Yeah, the Diablo book I tried is pretty dragging. I just didn't like any of the characters or anything. I like the Diablo games, but not the book (only tried the first one).

Really, you can't go wrong with reading them as hey, you're reading something, and they're short and easy to read, so you're not really out much time or anything.
