Book "warranty?"

I got a book from my girlfriend as a gift and I've been carrying it around with my schoolbooks in my backpack. This morning, I pulled it out of my backpack and discovered that the binding is separating from the cover. It hasn't been subjected to any undue abuse - the other books in my bag have been there a lot longer and are in great shape.

Can I call the publisher and have them send me a new copy? Can I exchange it for a new copy at the store? I've never tried to get a retailer to honor a "warranty" on a book; is it possible to get a new one somehow?

EDIT: I emailed Random House and they're sending me a brand new copy free of charge! Now that's customer service.

Oh hardcover, I thought you wrote hardcore. That I had an answer to but not for the question you asked.
