Can any of you geeks (as a geek myself I mean that in an endearing way) recommend a book on internetworking? I.e., that explains the nuts and bolts of computer networks and communications between computing systems.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Mods if this should be in the network subforum, please move it.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for...
And not sure if it's the appropriate depth or brevity.
But you can try:

The Cisco curriculum books.

CCNA Discovery 1 Intro to Networking is pretty much a covers all bases sort of book.

Goes from What is the internet to cables and cards, protocols (basic), addressing, routers and switches, etc...

You can probably cop this on amazon for like 25-50$$$

Hollar if this helps!^_^

For myself I've just finished Mike Myers Network+ and it got me through the exam. Am currently reading Todd Lammle's CCNA study guide and its fairly advanced though the first chapters cover many basics.

For a quick reference you can access now I recommend the Cisco DocWiki and specially the Internetworking Basics.
