As part of the junior summer reading, I need to read a classic (pre 1900) British novel and a contemporary(post 1900) British novel. I enjoy genres like mystery, sci-fiction, and fantasy.

Need some recommendations.

Cannot be:
Pride and Prejudice
Emma
Animal Farm
1984
The curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Alice in Wonderland
Lord of the Flies
Frankenstein
THe story of Lucy Gault
The Evre Affair
The Handmaid's Tale
Wuthering Heights
Brave New World
Angela's Ashes
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Heart of Darkness.. Conrad is one of those authors that is so brilliant with words it is difficult to read straight through, but the reward is worth it.

This highly symbolic story is actually a story within a story, or frame narrative. It follows Marlow as he recounts, from dusk through to late night, his adventure into the Congo to a group of men aboard a ship anchored in the Thames Estuary.

read the wiki blurb. Looks interesting. Will definately check it out. Thanks Farang.

read the wiki blurb. Looks interesting. Will definately check it out. Thanks Farang.

The more motivating thing for most people is that it was the basis for Apocalypse Now.
