book donations

why is it that when i try to make book donations to libraries, they won't give me a receipt for a tax write-off? am i just having bad luck?

I gave never had such problems with over 6 librarys in different states.

I just hand them the books and they will give be a blank reciept of acknowlegement.

An alternative is to lay the books out on the floor and take a photo before heading over to the library. If you would get audited, that's better than nothing.

But I would be more concerned that I could justify the value of the donation.

If the donation is for the library to re-sell, the legal tax value of your donation is what they get (almost nothing) not the cover price of the books.

Last I checked you don't need a receipt for a $10 donation.

thanx for the insights. it must be my cities libraries... i called them up about donating some of my books and tax writeoff and they said they don't give receipts. oh well. maybe i'll do what kranky said and take pictures.
