The company I work for finally got a project that is funded by the stimulus plan.

One problem...everything you purchase in this plan must be made in the USA or funding will be taken away.

We no longer want this project. Finding electronics that are made in the US is.... well.... next to impossible.

You should be thankful that your company got a part of the stimulus plan. Thousands of other companies/business could have used that money to just stay alive.

fyi, no one knows where most of the money went. This has been the first project we got that involved stimulus money, and teh deadline to use it is July 31st, so it look slike it will be the last. We usually do city and state projects also. We thought that we just were not looking hard enough, but we asked other firms and most of them have not seen any stimulus money projects at all.

Your company should have actually read the "buy American" clause a little better than, because it most certainly does not state that everything you purchase must be made in the USA or funding will be taken away.

It says that things should be purchased from USA based sources were possible and feasible, meaning, if you have 2 choices, and both are financially possible within the project funding, then you go with the one made in the USA. If no such product exists that's made in the USA (or it would be financially impossible to utilize for the project), then you can buy from wherever you want)

So, your company fails at reading comprehension. Good luck staying in business.

So we borrowed the money from China. You want to then give it back to Asia through purchasing goods, and then someday return the principle + interest to them as well.

How is that supposed to stimulate again?

I know what you mean. We are trying to help local business and we needed to metal stamp a battery contact for our product... price difference between US and China is like $16,500 just for the tooling vs. $750 in China. It makes no sense whats so ever to make it here... even if we are very supportive of local businesses.

Imagine the Chinamen's reaction when we decide to print money and dilute their dollar holdings.

That's kind of a neat requirement. You're not entitled to the stimulus money, so as long as its stimulating all US companies in the process, then cool!

Add to that Hilary came back from China and said we need to give them aid

Giving free money... to a country we owe hundreds of billions of dollars to... head asplodes.

Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Protectionism is what turned a bad recession into the Great Depression.

its sad that people dont buy american. We should all buy american. Part of why our country is doing so badly is that we produce almost NOTHING here, meaning a heck of a lot less jobs. Even our own government signs government contracts for military airplanes to companies that dont produce their planes in the US. And the list goes on.

So, i say, pay a little more, and buy american.

I disagree. I think that 'Buy American' is what we need to be doing to stimulate our own economy.

I was just reading a history article that listed Thomas Jefferson's Embargo Act as one of the 10 worst presidential blunders of all time. Of course, that one COMPLETELY BANNED ALL INTERNATIONAL TRADE. A bit extreme, even for the time.

Yep. Mistakes should be learned from, not repeated. :(

Part of the reason we don't manufacture much anymore is because government mandates/regulations/rules/taxes have made it too expensive to manufacture here. It's only going to get worse as this administration adds more taxes, cap & trade, more regulations, etc.

Well it sounds (from Slick5150's explanation) that the "Buy American" clause is more like a "try to buy American" clause, which makes a lot more sense. If you're looking at two options and the American one is trivially more expensive, I don't think it's a bad thing for the government to provide funds only if you spend the small amount extra for the American one. On the other hand, too much protectionism would completely defeat the purpose of the stimulus bill. No one would qualify for the stimulus money and it would just sit, doing nothing.

We have evolved from a manufacturing country into a service country. It's the natural progression of things. When China finishes its industrial revolution they'll be in the same boat as us and production will start up in some other 3rd world country.

that has to be precluded by "make american"

and in regards to electronics...yeah, i can see that being hard to find.

unfortunately... service countrys are doomed to decline and manufacturing countrys are rewarded with rising...

while the head cashier at walmart can figure this out, why cant the geniuses at the head of our economy.

Yeah, because unprofitable companies will magically become profitable with the stimulus. Can I get a puff of what you have?
