Boo South Florida housing prices

So I'm going to probably have to pass on a job promotion because the cost of living in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas is impossibly high.

We're living in Charlotte, NC now and renting a coworkers previous house. $850/month for a 1750 sq.ft 3br/2.5ba townhome.

After visiting Fort Lauderdale and seeing what $1250-$1500/month would get us (a ~1100 sq.ft 2BR/2BA rental), it's just not worth taking the promotion.

Buying a home in S. Florida is completely out of the question for us. I think I'd kill myself for paying $250k+ for a 2BR/2BA condo.

I honestly don't know you people in expensive markets can make it all work. Even with a ~30% raise, the numbers just don't make sense.

Go a little further west... Try the suburbs, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Tamarac, etc... My mom is a real estate agent dealing with rentals and sales in Coral Springs, FL (another suburb of Ft. Lauderdale, but the prices are very high there too), but she also deals w/ the surrounding areas...

LMK if you want her contact info, I'm sure she wouldn't mind giving you some ideas over the phone.

Florida seems to be one of most desired places to live in the past 5 years at least. The demand for housing has sky rocketed and when that happens the pricing sky rockets as well. It is a sellers market there, thats for sure.

aphex, I actually went to Coral Springs, checked out a few places. I liked this place called Turtle Run off of Sample Rd. My eyes popped out though when I discovered it was $1200/month rent + $30/month water for a 1BR/1BA. My wife and I would kill each other in a unit that size. The 2BR/2BA was $1440.

Oh yeah, there was a $175 app fee, $200 deposit, $400 admin fee, $550 pet fee up front too. :Q :Q :Q :Q :Q I checked out some places in Sunrise, Lakes at Welleby and Reflections at Welleby, and it didn't seem like somewhere I'd want to live.

I think I've kind of made up my mind already. The area is nice, but for only a ~30% increase in pay (plus losing my company car that I use personally that also has insurance paid for by company) it doesn't make financial sense. Staying in Charlotte, we can buy a lot of house for our money in a year or so.

If something changes and a higher offer is made, I will probably definitely get in touch with you via PM to get her contact info.

Also, thanks for replying in all 4 of my South Florida threads over the past few months. Your assistance has honestly helped during the whole process.

Charlotte is one of those most affordable housing markets in the country. Sucks if you have to leave; great if you're moving there 🙂

Can't you make a case to your boss about the higher cost of living and see if they can increase your pay or offer some kind of assistance on your rent?

It's been attempted. For some reason, there is no regional pay differential for this job on top of the new salary.

It blows my mind, but whatever.

It is all quite okay, I do like Charlotte, the current job isn't bad and has a huge perk (the company car), and home ownership is much more of a reality in Charlotte for me than South Florida.

I live in Tampa Bay, It's not much better. I have a 2 unit duplex I rent out a 2/1 800sqft for about 700/month the only reason it's that cheap is we bougt he house before the pices jumped. if I bought it today, I'd have to charge at least $1000

I had a 1 bedroom / 1 bath 650sq ft place in Sarasota for $800/mo 🙂

We ended up buying a townhouse right before the prices skyrocketed...

We now pay a $550/mo mortgage on a place worth almost 300k.

I bought a small house in Hollywood, FL 2 years ago for 165k....now if I'd sell it I'd have to ask for 300K....its ridiculous what's happened with the prices down here.

thing is even cashing in on the house...any new house would cost double...and the taxes alone will kill you.

So I'm stuck in this small house until who knows when.

This is why I am renting my house out here in FL and moving to VA in about 3 weeks. Prices here are insane. BTW I am in the Brandon, FL area

Wow. I would take $250k for a 2 bed/2ba condo in a second in CA.

LOL, that's why it is expensive to live in South Florida - there ARE no "rurals."

I feel your pain, I live in Ft. Laud and paid $200k for an 1100 sq ft house - which I could easily sell for $300k today. But, on the bright side, it has been 80 degrees and sunny all week, I have a 27' fishing boat floating at a buddy's dock 2 miles away, and I can spend the weekend fishing and diving in the Atlantic, then hit the beachfront strip to watch the spring breakers get drunk and crazy.

In perspective.. it's not so bad. 🙂

How can people afford housing in expensive markets? Simple, they lived there when the inflation took place and were able to make it up in equity. As far as the renters go, they were SOL and the ones not making wages to keep them there had to go somewhere else unless they were "grandfathered in" to lower rates.

To Lynchburg, VA my mother is a real estate agent there, houses are really cheap in that area.

Yeah, you're nuts to even think about leaving there. If I move from here, it will be to that vicinity, probably more toward Winston-Salem.
