Boo SDTV, when will HDTV be the new standard?

HDTV has been around a long time now, and still there aren't many channels in HD, not many at all. We still don't get local channels in HD (I'm in Tucson). We got a real nice new 50" Plasma screen, and it's great on HDTV stuff, but can only do so much with SDTV, which is meh. Do most cities get local channels in HD now? Anyone know when Tucson will get locals in HD?

I recently got a new satellite package from DirectTV, but even then there's not many channels in HD. It's a big noticeable dropoff when going from an HD channel to an SD one. I'm wondering what's taking so long for HDTV broadcasts to become more widespread.

You're an early adopter. We might be getting a bit past that phase by now, but not by much. I plan to buy my first HDTV for my 30th birthday, in June of 2012.

Most of our local channels are in HD. But for the most part I only watch football in HD. But yeah, the picture sure does look better on our Plasma as well in HD.

I may wait longer, maybe a little sooner but I doubt it. My tv shows me the news, plays dvds etc. I don't really have much time to watch tv anyway so I don't bother with it. And besides even though I am lower middle class (>30k) I don't have the money to waste on a big tv

Man, I'm already planning the demise of HDTV. Our technology is increasing at an amazing pace, I'm ready for UHDTV.

I think by the year 2007 all tv stations MUST be digital... as far as HD I would have to take a wild guess of 2012 like the guy stated earlier... :-(

yeah when they find the bandwidth for UHDTV signals that'll be crazy - but given they're having issues with HDTV bandwidth (lots of channels starting to look worse due to overcrowding of the medium) I don't expect to see UHDTV for quite some time.

I know, but come on, if you're going to make a new standard, at least make it a real leap.

I understand that UHDTV made viewers sick to their stomachs as they couldn't differentiate real from broadcast.

whenever you can get one for below $300 w/o having to jump through some convoluted deal or wait in line from 2 nights before.

exactly, i don't plan on getting a HDTV until i have wasted my money on everything else. personally i don't care about seeing everything in enhanced clarity.

people say, well what about games? eye candy can only go so far and i prefer superior gameplay. i don't care that the ps3 can do 1080p. i don't need to see every crevace and undigested peanut in the the next turd that sony calls a groundbreaking game.

Digital stations are up, but there's a surprising amount of shows/content that isn't in HD. I would think that all NFL games would be recorded and broadcast in HD, at least broadcast in HD for local games, however that is not the case as about half the games aren't HD. Granted, the digital broadcast of non HD content on an HDTV does look better than analog SD broadcast on an HDTV.

I think it'll be a year or so before all the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) are all HD for just about all of their network programs (last night while watching NBC, I was surprised to find Scrubs in SD while Earl, the Office, and 30Rock were all HD - scrubs squeezed in between).

After that I think it'll take a while longer for the cable channels to switch

exactly...

im not spending 1000=5k on a freaking TV.. I could get alot more usefull things for that.

I just got a 32" Olevia HDTV for $573. Well worth the money. While there is still a lot that's not in HD, a lot of what I watch is: Lost, The Office, Law and Order: CI, Law and order: SVU, The OC, Conan, Leno, ER, and Desperate Housewives.

Once I can get Nip/Tuck and Battlestar Galactica in HD I'll be set.

Amen.

Problem is I know a lot of directors are still NOT using HD cameras but simply shooting on standard video. This means the show will always take a serious hit in terms of quality because you can't go back.

until someone do something about the regional cable monopoly, then they would then pass bills to make OTA HDTV available everywhere. i think cable companies are lobbying against this?

HDTV looks amazing on this TV, but standard def looks quite bad. It's weird in high def, all the commercials change size/quality 😛 - Will football tomorrow be in HD? How about the cartoon lineup on fox? (Simpsons, Family Guy, etc). Is there a place where I can find out what is in HD and what isn't? Some channels are all HD but more are just HD for certain things.
