My trusty 28~105mm Canon Ultrasonic II lens lasted me through the jungle & storm of Thailand, Vietnam, Malasia, and the beach & sand of Mexico, Texas, California, and the freezing cold of Alaska for 13 years. And, now it packed in after I droped into the fine sand of Long Beach (Vancouver Island).

It served me well for over a decade and now this great lens finally give in to due use & abuse.

....Well, maybe it is time for me to look for a new lens.

I have a Canon F1 & EOS 1 combine with 3 L lenses once, but the added weight was a killer. I don't do much treking with pro equipment much longer (I have a lightweight 50mm f1.4 for speed) and uses zoom for the rest of the task.

At the moment I'm looking at getting the 28-135mm USM IS (Image Stablized), or the 24-80mm USM as a replacement.

That 28-105 is about the perfect range for a general use lens imho. I've been wanting one but I hardly use my Rebel enough to justify it.

What happened to it?

Did sand get inside? Or did it get scratched? Or is it physically broken?

The sand got inside the barrel and reck the focusing gear.

Ahh...

You might be able to salvage it if you can take it apart and clean it... Don't try and focus it in the meantime..

You are right that 28-105mm is the best range for general photography. And you can get them new in that range (28-90mm as little as $90.00) but it have a range of f:4-5.6 and not good enought for print that is larger than 8x10 (might get way with the ocassion 11x14).

I would like to get the 24-70mm f2.8L lens, but it is expensive and a heavy lens. The 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 USM IS is a very sharp lens that capable of producing good prints at 11x14 and the ocassional 16x20. The 28-135 is a slow lens, therefore it limit the flash range (that what my 50mm f:1.4 is for). However the IS technology alow handhell at 1.5-2 stop lower if needed that in turn would give me an affective hand held equivalent to f:2.8 at 135mm.

I have tried that and it is a no go. The lens is sealed by electronics at the rear, therefore it have to be open from the front (it is unlike the old & simple to fix FD lenses). I have priced the tool that uses to open the front element well over 6-7 year ago and it was $80.00. And it is not worth the effort to bring it to a store, because the labor is about 66-75% of the replacement cost.

I purchased it at around $700.00 CAD 13 year ago, and now the 28-135 is a much better lens that is about $700.00 CAD. The 28~105 USM II is price at about $350.00 CAD.
