boo for random reboots :(

here's the rundown:

FIC Radeon 9700NP
Athlon TBRED 2000+
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Ultra
512MB PC2700 Crucial DDR
365 W Enermax PSU

After playing BF1942 for about an hour, POOF! reboot. I jumped into the bios quickly to check system temps... CPU was as 48C with my Volcano 9 ramped up from 1500rpm to 3500ish

I did have an Nvidia card before this. I didn't go through that whole driver cleaning process, I just uninstalled, yanked card, and installed 3.2 Cats...

any ideas, suggestions, etc ?

OS? And maybe this should be in the Tech Support forum?

XP has a "feature" that causes it to automatically reboot on a system error. That's one potential solution. You also didn't mention if you're running your rig at specs or OC'd. If you're OC'd on the CPU, RAM or Vid Card, that could cause the system to fail as well.

What kind of cooling do you have in your case? Given your specs, I imagine it gets quite hot in there after an hour of gaming. I'd recommend at least one high-air flow intake and exhaust fan at a minimum, and perhaps more depending on whether or not air flow is obstructed (especially around the new 9700).

i had a similar issue before... turn out to be faulty capacitors on the motherboard. u could take a peek at ur mobo. it only takes like a minute.

right on dansajd, it should be in the tech support forum. i wasnt thinking 🙁 boo for me

anyway, running xp pro sp1 with latest hotfixes

nothing is oc'd

i took a look at the event viewer, and here's the info i find:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0xbfa00f13, 0xb5cb6820, 0x00000000).

A search in the knowledge base (searching by the first hex value) uncovers this seemingly unrelated error:
A "STOP: 0x1000008E In Emupia2k.sys" Error Message Appears After You Upgrade from Windows 2000
STOP: 0x1000008E (c0000005, f80ef98c, f02f3b94, 00000000)In EMUPIA2K.SYS
Cause:
This behavior occurs because the Windows 2000 device driver for the Audigy sound card is not compatible with Windows XP, and Windows XP does not include an updated device driver for the Audigy sound card.
Solution:
Get a new driver.

Not sure what to do here. Mods: feel free to move this to tech support if you so wish

selfbuilt:
2 out fans on the back + 2 in PSU
1 intake on the front
1 intake on the side over the vid card

the air coming out the back is warm as expected but not overly hot

spanky:
I got a big ol' window, so i'm always looking at my mobo. how did you find out it was faulty capacitors?

good caps have perfectly flat tops... they look like mini soup cans. but u know sometimes soup can's get dropped and their tops get puffed up looking. well... bad caps have puffy tops. sometimes it might be hard to tell by looking... u might need to touch the tops. careful tho... they might be a little warm.

I had this same problem with a Santa Cruz, I installed latest drivers and problem vanished.

okay.. turns out SC4 doesn't like AA or AF (or both). I turn them to application preferance (of which there is no setting in SC4) and it runs fine.

P.S. for those of you that are running SC4, there was a new update released april 7th

anyway, rage3dtweak doesn't seem to change my settings (at least when i go into the CP and check that it has changed them) so i'm not sure what to do about that, if that's normal behavior, but on screen change it will set the right condition, or if i need a different tweak program

anyway, with things working now, time to crank up the boost!

edit: upon discovering the problem, i scoured ea's tech support database for problems and came up with this thread, although it only mentions a geforce and AA:
http://eatech.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/eatech.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=fbIVdpGg&p_lva=&p_faqid=10589&p_created=1042743845&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1BbnRpLUFsaWFzaW5nJnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9MyZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT0zNjcmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9fmFueX4mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT02NiZwX2NhdF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfc2NmX2ZhcXMqYyRwbGF0Zm9ybT0xODImcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=

I submitted a new ticked with a bit more information and the fact that it seemed to be AA and not specific to the Geforce line

I get the same type problem with my old HP 8565C with a Ti4200 BGF. Anytime I play CS it restarts at random points in time (anywhere from 30 secs to 30 minutes!). And this only happens on CS but I have done everything thinkable to remedy this problem (Well at least reoinstalling all video drivers and the entire half-life installation).
