Power hungry school board. They get paid sh!t so they have to flaunt whatever little authority they have in order to get their kicks. Worked the same way at my school, and it was a small one.

Further proof that just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean you should.

"I feel that if you don't use your rights you lose them."

That is simply not true in all situations.

Also sounds like the cops had it out for him, and they lost.

I like this kid - he has balls and spirit. I think the case on the part of his school is silly - defiant kids like him are the future leaders. If he wasn't harming anyone they could have given him detention or other slaps on the wrist because discipline is important. But calling in the cops? Suspensions? It all seems like a major over reaction.

It's about whether or not the school has a right to control student speech. He was not even on school grounds.

Drugs have little to do with it, beyon being a subject of reasonable debate in the state.

ULTRA BUMP! But seriously, so long as companies are required to put those ridiculous "for tobacco use only" stickers on bongs, you can't fully designate "bong hits" as being directly associated to illegal drug use. Double standards FTL once again.

How did this case end up getting resolved?

In this case though, they are 100% correct.

The boy and his father were treated outrageously by the school and local law enforcement and fully deserve to be compensated for it.

Even libertarian and conservative orgs are taking up the boy's cause. It doesn't take a liberal to see what an abuse of power and the boys rights has gone on here.

Meh, sure, they're unwittingly helpful in this instance, but the only reason they give a shit is to promote their own dumbass organization.

Mac, why do you hate America and the Bill of Rights so much?

The ACLU's sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights...even when the cause they take is unpopular.

I don't always like the causes they take on. Gawd knows I was pissed when they defended Rush Analcyst Limbaugh's drug dealings a couple of years ago...

It seems like it's usually only those people who are Republicans who hate the ACLU...the defenders of the US Bill of Rights.

Why is that?

He settled for violations of the Alaskan constitution.

The USSC ruled against his claim.

I know that because I think the ruling was BS. The dissenting opinion was spot-on, IMO.

kind of like the fundies that like to squelch on everyone else's freedom of speech and thought, cramming their archaic world views down everyone's throats, bankrupting school boards in the process.

see: Dover, Pennsylvania.
