This is nothing short of a plea for much needed help.

I recently found out about the husband of a girl i went to college with. He was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), which is a cancer of the blood. He was just married last year and is only 31 years old.

He and another friend, Vinay who was also recently diagnosed with AML do not have long to find a donor.

Please take a few minutes to hit the links below for information and to see if there are any upcoming drives in your area that you can sign up for.

"Getting registered is very quick and requires a simple cheek swab. Team Vinay has organized a nationwide campaign and we need you to get registered by visiting a local drive. Drives are currently taking place all around the country, including throughout California, Washington, Michigan, Illinois, New York and many other states. Please see the full list of locations here: http://www.helpvinay.org/dp/index.php?q=event."

Please help me to keep this thread bumped.

Save a Life. Be a Donor. If not for these guys, then for someone down the road that you might be a match for.

Thanks in advance.

well what blood type do they need?

Its not blood they need. Its bone marrow.

IIRC, a compatible blood type is needed for a successful transplant.

i would most certainly help for sure. Cancer is a horrible thing and i would do anything for anyone to ease their pain if i can.
Although i did not see any events in MI. :(

True statement. A compatible blood type is needed for all transplants I believe.

This plea for help is not limited to the two people that I know that are going through this. You never know, one day the person in need of a transplant may be someone you know and if you are already registered you might be a match for them!

A friend of mine has the same cancer. Though, he already had his bone marrow transplant, he got the marrow from his younger brother.

Hope your friends husband finds a suitable doner!

no, but from what I remember it is extremely painful (I know the transplant is). Not sure if they've improved upon the procedure, but many years ago when a classmate with Leukemia was going through marrow treatments, the process involved drilling into the bone to inject the marrow.

While there is certianly aenesthesia...the recovery is a bitch.

Marrow Donation FAQ's

Are there any risks or side effects?

1. Peripheral blood stem cell collection (PBSC) .....You might experience some flu- like symptoms, slight bone pain, or a feeling of heaviness during the injections. These discomforts usually disappear soon after the collection is completed. This will be discussed in detail with you.

2. Marrow harvest.....Other than the remote chance of a reaction to anesthesia or an infection the risks are minimal. This will be explained to you in detail. You may experience some soreness in the lower back.

This acutally isn't the case. The donor and recipient do not need to match blood types. But the Marrow Registry is definitely a great thing. I just had my bone marrow transplant 3 months ago and searched through this registry since no one in my family was a match.

So to anyone on the registry or to anyone that donates blood you're a big help to everyone. :D

I was debating a several hour long ride this weekend to cincinatti to register at the site linked from your friends sites, because nothing was listed in my area. I checked google and it came up with http://www.marrow.org/ as the national registry and they list several local centers. Any idea what the difference is? Also, the marrow.org site mentions a possible slight fee - "You can join today for $52 through online registration. For volunteers who join in person, sometimes all or part of the tissue-typing costs may be covered by a patient family, community group, corporation, The Marrow Foundation® or other sponsor. "
