Boinc sharing.... who's in charge?

Right now, I only have one project on Boinc. The main reason for this is because of the 'mysterious' project sharing Boinc utilizes.

Yes, I know you set the ratio of sharing you desire in the preferences, but it seems like that choice only applies some of the time, (if at all) depending on which projects I desire to share.

It seems that some projects issue deadlines that are so short, that project is constantly in "earliest completion" mode (or whatever it's called) because Boinc decides if it honors my share choices, the WUs might go overdue.

It's almost Bill Gates-ish that boinc decides it knows better than I do, how I want my resources shared... really frustrating.

Is there any way to override GOD and actually crunch the way I want to?

Crunch the way you want to, doesn't seem like it.
I have my 2 pc's on Rosetta.
I'm committed to Rosetta atm, and I get wu's paused while it's working on the next,
Seems to be the way it goes 😀
Think BOINC only wants to connect when it's ready 😀
There was a reason for that, the servers weren't meant to be overloaded. When the client was ready to report, it would 😀
PS:
What is GOD?

I learned the lesson too ...

DO NOT make your reporting time too large. I set my to 7 days and everything went down the crapper ...

Now I have it set to 1 or 1.25 days and everything is pretty much sane and normal ... every once in awhile, I get into "late" mode on a machine or two but most just do exactly what I want.

Perhaps that is your situation?

I also, do not care, when my machines report WU ... if it takes a day .. so be it ... that is how the machines stay on an even keel. Artificially overloading the servers by reporting results immediately seems NOT USEFUL.

mondo

{besides ... reporting immediately has no benefit except, possibly, for Rosetta because one must wait for others to report the results ... so don't get your panties in a wad (even for Rosetta) and just let the client do what is is supposed to ...}

I just cracked #2 myself :beer: :beer:

PS: Rosey will probably continue to get all my cycles too 😎

Thanks for the tip Mondo!

I think shorting my reporting time is a good answer. Rosey never goes without work for more than a few hours at a time, so there would be no loss.

(agreed..... immediate reporting is not a necessity)

Yep, Friday, I've been good all week, who is Rosey??
Don't tell me, Rosetta ::::::::::😀
WoW, bad reflexes there 😀

If I remember right what Rattledagger said, BOINC is supposed to keep track of when it goes into "earliest completion" mode and then "pay back" what was taken from other projects.

The idea is really an awesome idea when you think about it.

I understood that it could take a while for BOINC to even up the "pay back".

How long have you left it alone without making changes?

This will help others to know if it is worth waiting 😉

unfortunately, my information is dated... (back to when I shared SETI and Rosey with TAS) and wouldn't be much help as I had my cache set at a ridiculous 10 days.

(and yes, it is a great feature idea for boinc to try and keep track and let it all come out in the wash... as I'm sure it does. I am not intending to bash BOINC with my questions... I like WindowsXP too, but wish I had a little more control of my system and am always looking for ways to do that too.)
