BOINC Seti

Is it common for BOINC to be waiting for schedulers to give it new work? I had my first three jobs finish an hour ago and it still hasn't collected anything new...

FYI, the first job took 8 hours. The other two were just under 4 hours each, I guess the first one was bigger. I'm running the BOINC GUI on a P4 3Ghz, it's set for background processing, so I don't know if those are good or bad times.

For a PIV @ 3Ghz those are not very good times..
My CPU is comparable to yours (AMD A64 @ 2.2Ghz) and is doing a job in a little more then 2hours with the longest of the past 40 results taking 2h45m.
So there must be something a little wrong there. Do you run 2 instances (if you have HT enabled?)
You can check your computer on the BOINc website to see what the benchmark scores are. You could compare them with scores of other peoples machines.

The've changed something with the schedulers so that might be the reason why you don't get any work.
There is a news-posting on the BOINC website (second posting) where they say how to make sure that you're getting new work..

Keep us posted if your times are getting better! Good luck! 🙂

I only have one instance running. Not sure if I have HT or not? I saw a table on THG that said Northwood 3Ghz was HT but would that apply to a laptop? Info from CPU-Z:

Package: mPGA-478
Family: F
Model: 2
Stepping: 8
Revision: C1

Multiplier: 23
FSB: 133
Bus: 533
L2: 512KB

Memory-wise, 512MB of PC2100. Hope that's enough info, wasn't sure if you needed any of it.

I mainly use the machine for browsing and Winamp. It also runs NAV so maybe that's why I'm slow. Either that or it's a poor performer cos of the MB and memory? I don't know enough to comment.

TIA for any info.

Not having a p4, but if you're really got a memory-multiplier of 23 it's not unreasonable it's slow. It's atleast this way with my AMD...

If the machine is HT, this will show up as 2 cpu's in the BOINC-computer-listing, it will also take longer time.

BOINC will not ask for more work before you reach your min-#-cache-days, one cpu is completely out of workor one of the result is 1 day from deadline. You can manually do an "update" under "project-tab".

Your CPU is support HT.

In CPU-Z, are you selectable at "Processor Selection" for "CPU #1" or "CPU #2"? If yes, your HT is enable.
If not, you need to enable HT in BIOS (read your laptop manual for how to go into BIOS).

With HT enable, your CPU should have better performance. 🙂

For HT CPUs, right click in task bar, click Task Manager, or Ctrl+Shift+Esc and under Performance, does it show the performance for 2 CPUs or one? 😉
