Boinc Service Install

Hey guys,

I've got 3 machines that I'm trying to get boinc working on, I installed the client last week and none have reported any work yet. When I login boinc pops up like it should and has work and is crunching away but I think it is closing when no one is logged in. I've tried reinstalling a couple times but nothing is changed.

From what I've read online boinc should always install as a service now, there is no option for it in the installer. But there is not a BOINC service in the services control panel.

I had the same problem with all of the version 6.x clients. There's no option to manually install it as a service, and the client doesn't create a service on its own so the program only runs while the BOINC Manager is running (so a user has to be logged in and can see - and mess with - the Manager tray icon). This is the main reason I'm still running 5.10.45 on all of my computers.

Ok. I moved back to 5.10.45.
Also, if anyone after me goes to download it, when you go to the boinc site it doesn't list it as a version. But if you copy the download URL of another version, then just change the numbers the download still works. :)

v6 does have service-installation as one of the advanced settings, but it's calling it "Protected application execution" or something similar.

For v6.2.xx this should be the default, but in v6.4.xx and later it's not the default, due to CUDA doesn't work on Vista if installed as service...

I tried that Protected Execution option on client versions 6.2.19 and 6.4.5 (the versions I happened to already have saved from previous installation attempts) and it still did not register a service on Windows XP Pro SP2.

Hmm, the 1st. time you installs as protected mode you'll need to re-boot, but I'm not aware this should have any effect for later service-installations of v6-clients.

But in any case, as long as you've not got a CUDA-capable gpu, there's really no big reason to upgrade from 5.10.45 at the current time.

I actually "upgraded" one machine directly from 5.10.45 to 6.4.5 and not only did the newer client not create its own service, it completely removed the service install that was already on the machine from the older client.

As you said, there really isn't any reason to install new versions unless you're running GPU projects (I'm not), and the service install problem is a big reason not to do it for me so I'll just stick with 5.10.45 until a project requires that I install a newer version...
