BOINC question

Has anyone right clicked on a unit being processed and clicked on show graph. Nice little 3d rendered version of the seti gui client pops up. Reminded me of old times.

Now everybody forget that little "tip" unless you don't mind loosing a lot of processing speed due to the rendering of the pretty gfx. Either that or just don't keep them open very long or very often. 😉 😀

Well, if you're got a better opengl-capable graphics card than my most of the pretty graphics should be done by this and not the cpu. 😉

What happens to your SETI1 stats if you activate your account to try BOINC on one pc? Will it continue to update your WU's for SETI1 and will they transfer over to BOINC?

Agreed. With todays gpu's and Fast cpu's i don't think there will be much of a hit in times with cli or gui workunits.

There is a huge hit on performance and it doesnt have to do with the rendering speed of your graphics card. Any real time output to your screen with gui drastically reduces its effeciency.

You can continue crunching "classic" seti@home & earn credits here, but it's uncertain anything crunched after 14. May will show up on the BOINC-side...

Twioz, i havn't done any BOINC wu's yet but do you have any times running both cli and gui on the same computer to say if there is a huge difference.

This is basically the way it works with the F@H GUI client... one looses only a few % of points per day running the GUI vs. the CLI (screensaver is a different matter). I was going by past history, in which the SETI GUI is so much slower than the CLI. If it's different with BOINC, that's good to hear, but I thought it was the same basic code underneath, in the part that actually does the computations?

Havent tested with Boinc but numerous test have been done with the Seti Classic and there is no reason to believe that the transition to Boinc is going to change that effect. But for Shoots and giggles I will try that out now.

I currently run 1 WU in ~ 2:53

with Graphics it takes : (in progress)

Sure, the gui will allways be slower then the cli but nowadays it won't be as huge as in the past. As RD said the gpu's do most of the work now for the pretty stuff.

In BOINC, the crunching is done by a separate application that is the same for gui & cli.
In the gui the different tabs draws variable amount of cpu-power depending on what's going on, there the disk-pie-charts will normally draw the most... Even then minimized to system tray it will draw more cycles if the last you looked at was the disk-usage, so I'll recommend choosing the "Project"-tab before minimizing.

So if you're not looking on the disk-usage nor running the screensaver, the BOINC-gui will use roughly less than 1 minute/day if constantly looking on some of the tabs, and probably 1 second/day if minimized, except then benchmarking that is. 😉
Of course if you're running a p-100 or something the gui will use a little more, but then again so will the cli.

With my fastest graphics-card being a Matrox G550 running the screensaver will seriously slow down crunching, but my guess is most around here has better cards. 😉
