BOINC-problem on P4-comp.

I do not know if this is the right forum but ... anyhow:

I have a Shuttle XPC-computer with a P4 @ 2.8GHz running 24/7.
I have had it for more than 1½ year (running BOINC and other DC-projects) and it has given me no problems.
It is cleaned out about every 4 - 6 weeks (dust hunt), has no spyware (using three different programs regularly), no viruses (checked repeatedly), is behind a hardware and software firewall (Zonealarm pro, latest version)

Win XP-pro is updated (SP2 and all updates), the firewall, spyware and AV latest version.
Running BOINC 5.2.13 with SIMAP, LHC, ans Seti. No unnecessary programs, drivers etc.

Problem:
When running BOINC the comp goes down every 8 - 9 hours and hangs. No reboot, nothing. It is not overheating (I have monitored the temp it stays below 78 degrees C). It does the same with BOINC 5.2.5. I have to reset the computer. No error messagees visible.

When runnning Folding@home or DPAD the comp runs perfectly 24/7. The processor temp is around 83 degrees C when running F@H and still the comp runs without any problems 24/7
.

I have looked at the BOINC-forums but not found anything helpful. I have paused different project and run them one at the time still the comp goes down. I have tried older versions of BOINC, AV, Firewall, disabled video-drivers (i.e. used the native window VGA-driver), removed all drivers which are not necessary, disabled stuff in BIOS (serial ports, USB-ports, etc), updated the BIOS and still the problem is there.

To me it seems not to be am application (project) problem, not a hardware problem, not a driver or BIOS probelm, but a BOINC problem. I could be wrong though and therefore:

Any ideas?

I will (probably) post a similar thread at the BOINC-forum but would first ask my TeAm-mates ... 😉 ... if I am missing something ... :Q

I have had similar problems with BOINC on several computers ...

SETI and SIMAP seem to be problems for some systems ... but it seems to be a disk access problem ... not a thermal or CPU problem ...

Hope this helps ...

Keep running Folding@Home on it. 😛

😉😉

sorry, just threadcrapping 😉, can't offer anthing more. 😉

😀

The CPU runs at default speed and voltage. No OC-ing.
I intend - if this is not resolved - to restart my F@H-crunching....
I have a second XPC (which is running perfectly OK) which has the same PS and I will exchange them and see ...
But: why would this happen when running BOINC only? And not F@H or DPAD?

I will run BOINC with other projects than seti and SIMAP and see what happens ...

Yeah, that is one of the options in my plan. I am just now running the comp with Rosetta and LHC - and all is well as yet ...
I have checked the HDD (using Spinright) - no problems; I have defragged it (using Diskkeeper) - no errors and looks good now.
I'll report back when I find something ...

Petrus loves this kind of errors. A lot of work and a lot of learning. Grrrrr!

BOINC must be using OS files that F@H and DPAD don't.

I'm with BadThad and think a reinstall will fix this.

Are you *sure* that the temp you're reading is accurate? Some mobo sensors are "not so good".

But yeah. An XP re-install will fix lotsa stuff. While you're at it, run services.msc and dump the crufty bits. 🙂

OK this is what I did: backed up all data - including BOINC-directory, rebooted with Spinright, scanned disk for errors - there were a few, reformatted HDD, resinstalled win xp pro, firewall, AV, updated win (I have most of them on a CD) updated over the net the latest stuff, defragged disk, installed BOINC, started projects.

All works perfectly except SIMAP - the *!&%¤#+?^* computer just froze after 48 minutes, just after accessing the HDD. So reset, take off SIMAP, and all has worked perfectly since then for more than 32 hours ... SETI, Rosetta, LHC, Einstein, Predictor, all work happily - except SIMAP. I can live with that. The comp is now clean, no MediaPlayer, no codecs, no nothing - just bare-bones minimal Win-XP, Zonealarm pro, Avast-AV and BOINC. (I did not restore any data - except the BOINC-directory).

I'll fool around with this baby some more - try to find out what is going on. Tell you all when I know more.
