Was reading thru the BOINC Seti thread, and noticed that there are optimized versions of BOINC out there for most machines. What is looks like these clients do is get added speed by using the SSE or MMX portion of the CPU to eek out a couple added calculations. I just loaded on on a Dual AMD MP box, and a Dell Pent M 4 box, overall they seem stable, and produce an output about 30-40% greater... :Q You have to be sure to download the correct one for you CPU too though. Look at: http://www.marisan.nl/seti/ Scroll down and use the most recent client.
Give it a try, seem to work well. I'll keep you posted on performance increases.
BTW: Easy install. All I did was closed down BOINC, and extract over the exisiting files.
