Boinc on Core Duo process using Ubuntu

TallBill

Lifer
Just installed Ubuntu on the laptop last night because that's what will be on it for at least the time being. Anyways, got Boinc up running fine and attached to Einstein@home, but it's going horribly slow. Not only were the benchmarks real low, but the Wu's are going almost half speed.

Anyways, is there something I need to do? Haven't touched linux in quite a while.

Half speed compared to Windows XP on the same laptop?

I've never run Einstein....any clue on the forums...windows vs linux?

Is this 32 bit ubuntu latest release?

xp 3200+ on Windows:
Measured floating point speed 2026.33 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 3730.73 million ops/sec

exact same pc on ubuntu:
Measured floating point speed 1581.06 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 4164.09 million ops/sec

Those are for enigma@home, and I haven't a clue how the "ratings" work, but IMO linux client is slower.

There is a linux beta client but it's not that much of a speed increase and looks like it's high maintenance right now.

I did find a post in this thread that may help you out though. If you run boinc in "wine" (windows emulator for linux) you will get full speed again.

I don't have any experience installing wine for ubuntu but may try it someday if I need it.

Ok, looks about right. Installed WINE and got it running fine, but Boinc is disconnected. I'll fiddle with it later, but looks like Einstein just sucks for Linux all around. Thanks!
