BOINC Command Line Setup

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on the forum in a million years, but I wanted to get back into SETI a little bit. I'm having problems getting boinc to work properly using just the command line (no graphical interface). I setup my password file for the daemon, attached to the seti project with my full account key, but it doesn't seem to be able to get any work units. TIA 🙂

EDIT: I tried using attach code but it didn't come out very nicely, here is what get_state returns:

Hello there David, nice to see you again. 🙂

During your installation of BOINC, if you don't select the option to make BOINC your default screen saver you will be running pretty much in a mode that compares to the old CLI CLIENT method we all used to run SETI.

Have you checked the ACTIVITY settings? The default is to run based on preferences which means that BOINC will not run when you are actively using your computer. You need to change that setting to RUN ALWAYS. That way you can observe WUs being downloaded via MESSAGES or ACTIVITY tabbed windows.

Not sure if this actually addresses your problem so if it doesn't please elaborate a little more.

It's nice to be back 🙂

So I installed boinc/seti through the apt-get command in debian using nothing but the command line (this computer doesn't even have X11 installed) I believe all my settings are correct for my profile and that run always is enabled.

I noticed in get_state that I'm getting nrpc_failures failures (at this time it's at 10). Would this be possibly causing the problems?

My main system went down and I've been rebuilding for the last two days. :roll:

My suggestion assumed you were running Windoz ... I can't help with the Linux stuff. 🙁

So I solved the issue. The system only has 128 MB of ram and my preferences were set to use 25% of my ram at max... apparently this was just slightly below 32 in reality, which is the minimum for seti to run. Everything seems fine now 🙂

Apparently Pentium MMX isn't as fast as it used to be... only going to do 4 a month according to the early estimates, lol
