10kw lamps are sometimes used in stadium spotlights and such. Many are ARC lamps now though.

I know the rough melting point of steel and the different colors that indicate what temperature it is when a material is glowing off the top of my head... but only in metric.

After watching steel go by for 18 yrs. I could tell within 50F the temp of steel. I was also motivated by the fact that my job was to make the process work and the steel's temp was just one such variable that could screw it all up.

Those PJ lamps are Xenon HID.
For raw output and just plain awe nothing beats the carbon arc lamp.
Those can be built quite huge and put out a beam of light that can be seen 50 miles away at night.

Most stadium lighting uses Venture 1.8kW double capsule lamps (for instant restrike capability in event of brief power interruptions).

LEDs are rapidly replacing HID lighting too.

Wonder how much a glass kit like that goes for. That's pretty much optical grade glass I would imagine.

It's hand ground and polished and near Brewster Window quality.
A lens like that is worth $1M+.

Pretty impressive that those imax lamps could be seen from here if one was turned on the moon. Comes to show just how bright they are. Let's not give advertisers any ideas, they'll just put advertisements on the moon by making a matrix of these bulbs over the whole surface. :p

It would suck. We have enough ADs bombarding us on a daily basis.

To me the moon is timeless. If it could talk imagine the sheer amount of history it could tell you. The Romans, Genghis Khan, Hannibal, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Paul Revers's night ride, and even when man touched its surface.

The resistance of cold (cold is basically pre-incandescent) wolfram is very low. The current flowing through the water would be feeble especially if it were de-ionized water.

Even if the HO ratio was optimal for combustion/explosion there isn't a suitable source of ignition present.

Unless one were to light a cigarette while doing so. Unless that cigarette was an e-cigarette. Unless that e-cigarette had a Li-Ion battery that picked a great time to vent with flame. Now where are my lithium pills when I need them?

The experimenter is experienced and despite the hazards present with these experiments, is well aware to keep the input power low enough to not be of concern.

Had this experiment been conducted outdoors with heavy blast windows surrounding it, I'm sure the goosing of power on the lamp's socket would have been appropriate to turn the bulb into a bomb!

10kW (filament) lamps are most commonly used in long range projection systems but are quickly being surpassed by more efficient replacements.

Lighthouses surprisingly use 1kW lamps due to the incredible power of their first order Fresnel lens.

Now, now. No goosing the ATOTers. They've had enough excitement for one day.

Where did you get this information from?
One may see a 10kW lamp from the ISS but the moon? ROFL!

The video mentioned that if you put one on the moon you'd be able to see it. My guess is it would have to be on a dark part of the moon though, like if it's a crescent moon and the bulb is outside the area the sun is hitting.

I'm also kind of curious to shine a couple kw spot light into the sky to see if I can see it from ISS live view. :p I think a 1w laser can actually be seen from it, but don't want to be pointing that in the sky willy nilly.

the video of him turning on that bulb in his backyard was crazy. he has some serious power drops i his house. i wonder what his power bill is.
