It's this kind of shit that drives wedges between parties and keeps us from reaching any kind of resolution. Government requires compromise and you're not going to get much of that when you spit in one another's eyes. It looks like it was somewhat disrespectful of the WH to issue the request with such short notice. However, given the status of the economy and our need for something to be done the Republicans shouldn't be putting the thing on hold for a campaign debate.
short notice? Obama's had 2 years to give this speech and didn't.

wasn't it just last week that Obama was like "hey guys, I totally have a jobs plan, but imma go on vacation first. I'll tell you all about it later. have fun on the unemployment line while I'm on the Vineyard!"

White House agreed to reschedule the speech to Thursday.

more and more, it kinda seems like Obama is incompetent when it comes to politics.

Traditionally, the President asks Congress to address them. The President does not dictate to Congress when he will address them. A prior commitment was in place, the Republican Presidential candidate debate.

Boehner is showing no disrespect for declining.

Incidentally, this will be what, the third jobs plan from this administration? The first two failed, so what, third time's the charm?

1) Not paying their fair share, millionaires and billionaires
2) Need shared sacrifice
3) Federal jobs bank for highway/shovel ready jobs
4) Extension of unemployment
5) I call upon all americans to have shared sacrifice to move forward (and by shared, he means soak the rich)
6) More stimulus
7) Darn republicans are stopping me from implementing my plans
8) We need bi-partisianship, meaning go my way

Come back after he speaks and prove me wrong. I know him, I know what he is. Fuck this president, it's time to stop him and that's what The People wanted.

He should go ahead and give the speech anyway, but it wouldn't surprise me if Obama gives in to Republican demands. It's the only thing he seems to be good at.
haha, you called it. F***, Obama is just a little bitch. What tits.

His speech will be a completely and absolute waste of breath anyway, I don't think anybody should bother with it to begin with.

I don't know if its incompetence or genius, it makes Obama seem reasonable and accommodating by doing this but ya one hand it makes him kinda look weak.

first it seemed like a petty, partisan jab to schedule his speech on the same date/time as the Republican debates, then it seemed weak to once again cave to GOP demands.

I don't really get the up side to this whole thing.

So Obama now believes the republicans will care or listen or act on his jobs program,
when they now dictate how and when he will talk?
If I didn’t know better, and I do not... I'd swear Obama is trying as hard as possible to lose this election. Maybe he wants to cash out, write books and travel? Totally disgusting leadership for any acting president. People hated GW, but more than that, people hate a woosie. I’m surprised Boehner doesn’t insist Obama wear a pretty little dress and do a little Shirley Temple dance before the full congress.
Woops… ***Breaking news*** again… Obama to wear a pretty little dress and sing “Animal Crackers in My Soup” Thursday evening @ 8pm.

The Republicans will get to the jobs issue that they pledged to in their Pledge to America after the debates.

Except for Rep. Michelle Bachmann, who else would NEED to be at the Republican debates?

Boehner thumbs his nose at Obama! This kind of blatant disrespect for the office of President is just disgusting. I can't imagine this happening in any other Administration.

Sorry there mister Prez, we really don't have time for your speach can you make it umm some other time, like maybe never?
Don't you mean the blatant disrespect Obama is showing for congress??

In case you forgot congress is an equal branch of government not the President's cheering section. He appears before them only at THEIR invitation (except for the state of the union which is mandated)

Historically the President has always conferred with congressional leaders before scheduling a joint session and an Boehner points out congress has to vote and authorize a joint session...

Incorrect. Even the SOTU address requires an invite. Just so happens that historically request by POTUS to address are not usually declined.

One would hope that Obama would have someone run the date by Congress first before putting it out in public. Of course, he might have and the GOP could have reneged after the fact. Either way, when even scheduling a speech becomes fuel for partisan arguments in DC and on ATPN, you know things are screwed up.

Ron Paul

there was an article on Politico today that indicated that not only did Ron Paul object to the speech occurring at the same time as the debates, he could force a floor vote on the issue.

maybe Boehner requesting that Obama reschedule was to save them both the embarrassment of the House voting against allowing Obama to address them.

Oh heaven forbid that the most important business affecting the livelyhood of all Americans in decades should take precedence over a republican primary debate 14mos before the election.

For that matter how dare the kenyan thats squatting in the whitehouse try and improve the economy in the next 14mos at all, we all know that would be bad for republicans chances to liberate the white house.
Obama has been on vacationing on Martha's Vineyard for two weeks!!

If this was THAT important he should have skipped his vacation and called congress back early and went right to work on his plan.

Instead he spent his days golfing and hanging out in his $50,000 a week rented estate...

Not incompetent. Arrogant is a better term.

Obama isn't a failure... we are failures for not realizing how great he actually is.

You guys need to get over the golf obsession. It just gets sad over time. What has congress been doing during the recess? Half of them have scheduled nothing. No town halls, nada.

Ron Paul has actually been doing a lot better than Bachmann in the polls lately.
Perry is currently in a pretty strong lead, then Romney and followed closely by Ron Paul. Bachmann is now in single digits last time I looked.

Did the media get over its golf obsession when it came to Pres Bush playing golf?

How come the media is on the green yelling out questions to Obama like they did with Bush?

This!

It looked really petty of him trying to jam his speech in on the very day the Repubs had their debate already planned, with the political purpose of giving them the business. This after he happily enjoyed his personal vacation. Really, all that does is piss people off. There is no upside to doing what he attempted, and I think his strategists did him a disservice with this stunt.

Obama's team also fvcked up because they didn't have a backup plan to this little game. Now they'll have to settle for competing with the start of football season on Thursday. Ha! As if that's a tough choice for people. Are you ready for some football ??

The White House's decision to announce a new jobs plan was forthcoming but to delay the plan itself until after the vacation was a bad decision.

The White House's decision to then schedule the jobs announcement for the same day/time as the prior scheduled debate was a bad decision.

Boehner's decision to tell the President to "cram it" will be praised/demonized by the appropriate sides.

The White House's decision to reschedule the jobs announcement to the same day/time as the opening of the season for the most popular sport in the country was a bad decision.

Really, the White House strategists just suck. They took what could be a good PR opportunity (jobs announcement) and turned it bad with the whole "Wait and see!" gag. Then they took a slightly bad situation and made it partisan with the debate timing. Then they took a partisan and bad situation and made it worse by ensuring that 27-30 million people will absolutely not watch.

sadly i agree

IF as some papers say Boahner claimed its because security sweeps don't allow for time then the WH was idiotic for sending it on that day without planning. IF Boahner is just fucking around and trying to to be an ass he is a idiot.

either way this is a fucking petty thing by all involved.

Give the man some credit, he's learning on the job how to be an executive for the first time in his life. His best advisers told him jobs spring from holes in the ground, you just gotta throw some money in.

Got it right. What a poor show by Pres. Obama and the White House staff, arrogant rookie mistakes.
