Not a Boehner fan...but this could be really good or really, really bad...depending on who replaces him.

u beat me to it by 1min. :p

holy WTF quitting altogether?!

I wouldn't have been surprised about vacating the Speaker chair but I would never have guessed he would leave all together. His formal announcement could be very interesting.

I actually am a Boehner fan. Despite clearly not agreeing with his policy preferences I think he's done a reasonably good job in an almost impossible situation. The hard right has been trying to oust him for years now, and my strong suspicion is that they have succeeded.

I wonder what the final straw was?

I honestly feel bad for Boener. Became speaker right when the party went batshit insane. Can't have been fun.

I guessing...but I imagine the final straw was the Planned Parenthood issue with him finally getting fed up dealing with the extreme element of the party.

He also seems to have lost the support of the Dems who have repeatedly bailed him out against his own party. He's adrift on his own now it seems.

The selection of a new Speaker should be fun. We might see a bipartisan pick as the few not-batshit-crazy Reps join with the Dems to pick a Speaker. The batshit crazy Reps don't have the votes to install one of their own.

Just heard Joe Scarborough say that Boehner is an old time process and deal making Politician he is tired of dealing with people in his party that have not held office and do not want to forge deals. Sounds pretty accurate.

It amazes me just how trite some people can be.

i tend to agree with him though

any man regularly crying in public at his job in front of thousands of people (and on TV) is a baby

he obviously never learned to control his emotion, which is something every man should have done by the time he turned 10

I don't see that happening. The polarized HoR mirrors the polarized electorate, anyone caucusing with the Dems will probably lose their seat in 2016. You're going to end up with someone more extreme than Boener, who is going to fight with the administration even more than Boener did.
