BODY SHOP PEOPLE....

Well, I have to fix my Altima soon. I got into a fender bender last month and I need to fix it in time for my inspection. I have to replace the driver side headlight, the front bumper, and the hood. I went to get an estimate, and all the places are quoting me around $1600.00 - insurance payment. I think my deductible is $500. They sent me a check for $1000.00, even thought it should be 1100.00. Now, I think fixing this problem does not cost $1600.00. My friend was telling me that since teh bumper is only cracked, he could just seal the crack and make it good as new. Some guy off the street said that he could fix my hood for $100 with just a hammer and 2 hours (i told him to screw off). I asked my friend about my hood and he said some iffy body shops will just take a hammer and bang everything into place. Is this true?

I found a headlight for $20.00, so i can do that repair myself. My friend said he would assist me in replacing my bumper, which costs $150.00. The hood, however, he said I should just bring that to some small body shop that will do it for cash since I also need to replace the lock mechanism.

i would do it straight with the money the insurance company gave me, butt hey all say that the car will have to be in the hsop for two weeks! (?) !

What do you guys think? When I first saw the damage, I did not think it would cost over $500.00.

1. Hood will most likely be replaced (hard to say for sure without pics) - its hard to straighten a hood (it has lost its strength already).
2. If the bumper is cracked, it has done its job (absorbed some of the impact) and both the bumper cover and the polystyrene or other bumper filler needs to be replaced so that if you ever get into another front-end accident, they continue to provide the same level of protection.

How old is the car?
