. . . putz. This guy irritates me so much, I can barely stand to watch his programs; which otherwise, are pretty good. He's arrogant, pushy and interruptive. Not to mention he has a habit of getting in the way on a job site. One of the dumber things I saw him do was ask when a wall was going to be lifted into place. The foreman says, "As soon as you get off it, Bob." He was standing right on it. You could see the waiting workers in the background rolling their eyes and shaking their heads.

On the other hand, his sidekick, Reily, is unassumming, informative and to the point. Even if he doesn't have all his fingers, he knows his craft. And he and Vila seem to have a good rapport (good for Vila, I guess).

O.k., [rant mode=off]. Another episode of Home Again just came on. Back to the t.v. (I'll probably be back in a half hour when Vila pissses me off again.)

He has a nack for asking the workers fairly obvious and stupid questions!

He does indeed have a "firm grasp of the obvious". And he may indeed be catering to those who don't have a clue. Then again, someone contemplating building a million dollar home (which is all these "home" shows deal with anymore), shouldn't be taking their tips from Bob Vila. While the content of his programs are accurate (I make my living renovating and remodeling), his presentation is awkward.

A number of years ago (at NBC) he was on the Letterman show. Halfway through the demo. Letterman stops and asks "Is every other word out of your mouth a plug"? Ever since then I had no use for Bob. He couldn't stop saying "Sears"

I can't watch that guy...

I have always believed that he is the anti-christ... Getting through people through the home improvement movement...

J/K

Norm Abrams is a woodworking GOD!!!

"...And never forget these... Your safety glasses!!..."

I just ignore Steve and listen to everyone else...

<< "Is every other word out of your mouth a plug?" >>

That's why PBS dropped him 10 years ago. But he still does it. I watched an episode last weekend where a guy was connecting some washing machine hoses in a tight space and Vila says, "This is a good time to use your RoboGrips®."

<< Norm Abrams is a woodworking GOD!!! >>

Yeah he is! But who can afford the equipment he has?! He must charge and arm, leg and left gonad for his work. Probably the same folks who can afford the homes featured on all the other shows. I'd like to see more basic shows like The House Doctor.

I believe Norm Abrams gets all those cool tools donated by the sponsors. Damn, he has everything. If he doesn't have the right tool for the job, the tool doesn't exist or the job can't be done!

True, true. Norm's equipment probably is "provided" Still though, you can tell that he puts a great deal of workmanship and time into a project. I bet one of his dressers or tables fetches at least a grand.

Yeah.... His stuff is pretty top of the line...

My Grandpop had his own wood shop... I think he collected each tool as he could afford it...

He never bought anything on credit...

These were OLD tools!! When he was unable to use them and ended up in the home... Gran sold them for the bill and she got 10k for the lot... Of course what he made and the history that went with them she could never get the value...

I went into the house and into his shop this past Dec and it hadn't had any woodworking done in 16 years... I could still the wood and him in there... It was wonderful... I didn't get a chance to say bye to him cause I was away when he died but that was pretty close... I have a lot of the things that he made...

Geez... Leave it to meto sappy!!!

Sorry 'bout that!!

Missus,

I find humor in your post. First you say Veela is Satan:

<< I have always believed that he is the anti-christ >>

then you claim:

<< Norm Abrams is a woodworking GOD!!! >>

That's proof positive god and the devil can work hand-in-hand. The original This Old House was a multi-year gig. ;)

Veela is a "bidnuss"/"marketing" man. You either love him or tolerate him. But I enjoyed the show and agree Norm is the sh!tz.

Actually, I think the best word to follow "Bob Vila, what a. . . " is "tool". :)

Oh, screw Bob! I don't think he can even drive a nail. No idea how he ever got involved in that type of show.

Now HomeTime is a differnt story. Not that I like their projects any better, but I can't keep my eyes off Robin Hartl or JoAnne Liebeler's butts! :p

Ah, HomeTime. Are those couples married, or are they just people stuck together for purposes of a show.

Women using power tools . . . mmm.

Bob Vila is the devil

I used to work at sears....sears wants to get rid of him so bad it hurts. he visits the stores and no one can stand him. he is a fabricated tool man, meaning, he they siad, hey you look good behind some safrty goggles, sell our product. he doesnt know jack!

Robogrips are actually decent, they were a very popular seller. the vise grips counterpart what was a part of the robo series sucked big time, half the time they would lock out of the box....and to open the jaw up...man lets say if you are in a hurry, just drop it on the floor, you will have a better chance.

villa is suck.

Vila is an actor... nothing else...

1: several yrs ago he sold a home that had many defects & was sued. His defense was that he was not an expert, had no training in building structures & was an actor. He won the case.

So he is certified by a court as a dufus.

2: He was dropped by PBS due to his commercial contract with Sears, which violated PBS noprofit stand.

3: Hometime ? They are not married & are a couple of klutzes too... Have you seen any of the filmings ? Both of them can barely walk & chew gum at the same time. I watched one set where both him & her were trying to drive a nail. It took about 15 tries before either of them could hit the nail !!! actors again...

4: ole Norm is a certified master carpenter & knows his sh#t !
