I'm trying to stock-up on boardgames to be a gracious host. The age group of the people I'm trying to accomodate is twenty-something to thirty-something. And it has to be games that are good for 4-8 players

Here's a few thoughts...
Monopoly
Pictionary
Trivial Pursuit
Uno

What others do you suggest?

Another vote for Risk, although it's only good for 3-5 players, any more/less then the game can be one sided..

Risk is one of my favorites, but the chics aren't into it like the guys are.

Axis&Allies...got that. The whole Masters Series games was cool, I've got Shogun (now called Samurai) and all it's pieces NEVER touched. But these type games are for die-hards, not really a light party fare type game.

Outburst and Chauvanist Pigs sounds promising.

Thanks

Axis & Allies we played in college for a record 27 hours. Non-stop. We eventually called it a draw just from shear exhaustion.

Settlers is a good game. Cosmic is a blast, but the rules will tax the strongest of minds, and the rules constantly change.

Me, I'm always up for a good ole' game of "Chutes and Ladders"... anyone want to play?

Jenga can be a great drinking game. On each block you write things like "The person to your left drinks 2" or "Everyone with brown eyes drinks 1" etc. Whoever knocks over the tower has to slam their beer.

Were you asking about drinking games or did I just take it in that direction on my own? :)

settlers is a great game. another is acquire. make sure you play the original version now the new version with bonus cards. it ruins the pure strategy of the game but however it adds the element of suprise to the game as well.

The Game of Life is always fun.

Anybody remember Fireball Island? I used to love that game when I was a kid...Torpedo Run, too.

Anyways, Pictionary is quite possibly the greatest drunk game ever (not drinking game...can't quite find a way to organize it...but it is fun once you're loaded! :)) You should see some of the things people will draw (or attempt to draw) when they've put down a few. Your reasoning is totally shot to hell too, so what you think is a simple representation of what you're trying to convey might be a flawed analogy to someone else playing. All in all frustrating, yet enjoyable! :)

Play your card game of choice and make some money off your guests! Anything that starts with "naked" or "strip" is good too ;)

I hadn't realized that settlers was such a popular game. A full 3 people above me mentioned. I thought I was one among the obscure who relished that game. I now see that there are other equal to my godly standing... ;)

Taboo rocks, as does Scattergories and Scrabble...
One of MY favorites is Boggle, and has ANYBODY out there heard of a little card game called Flux? That game is one of my favorites...

I love Settlers!!! I have only played it a couple times but I love it enough that I asked for it for Christmas... I found a computer rendition of it, but it's only fun against other humans.

Pictionary, Scattergories, (beyond?) Balderdash, and Jenga (gotta play Jenga!)
