board games

Hey guys, im thinking of starting a board game club with some friends. you know REAL board games, no Sorry, no Clue, no Monopoly 😱.

I want to play some real strategy games with some friends. games that could possibly take hours to play. Risk (old, played too much but still a classic), Settlers of Catan, Axis and Allies...

im thinking of having a board game club, meet once a month and play games. A lot of games allow for 6 ppl so that looks like a good number. I am wondering if anyone has ever organized a board game club and what guidelines or rules or whatever they used.

Here is what im thinking. Meet once a month and play for a couple hours. $5 due. Now this isn't so i can make money. 😀 it is so we can buy new games. i mean all i really have now is Risk. playing risk once a month could get old.

Is $5 a good amount?
Who should decide what games we get?
Who should get the game? Me? Share them?

just want to know what you guys think.

Also do you have any suggestion for some good strategy games?
i found a bunch at www.funagain.com
they seem to have good prices.

You just take the factor by 100.
So the dollar is a penny
I always try to do that with my friends but they won't because I always win.
🙁

$5 sounds fine .. though I probably wouldn't join a board game club.
You should vote on what games to get.
If you are going to play at your house every time you should get the games.

because it isn't the importance of winning that i care about, it is how deep and how much you have to think while you are playing it.

so all posts concerning monopoly. pbpbpbp!

yeah. i figure the first time we'll play for free, just play Risk. then ill propose that we "donate" $5 everytime so we can buy some other games. i guess its really up to them. if they don't want to pay then we can play Risk for the rest of our lives.

I would like to keep the games. 🙂 maybe ill get my friend Daniel to help me organize it, and we can share them...

or even better, ill buy the first game and then the $ goes to paying me back.

Dude you're missing out by not playing Sorry... the thrill... the excitement... being able to yell SORRY as loud as you can at your opponent. This game has no equal.

its a small step above War in terms of interaction. you make about 3 choices a game. 🙂

now Clue... my family plays some SERIOUS clue. we got a whole spreadsheet print out we use to analyze everything.

but still i want something with a little more to it.

no beer for me. im only 17

i got a name for my board game club

Dead Strategists Society

not only is it a total rip of a great movie, its really hard to say

Dude! You HAVE to get a GO board/Set for your club!! Once you learn how to play and get into it, its addictive!

Yeah .. I would definately ditch that name.

i've played a smaller version of Go. the one that comes with Klut'z book of Board Games. but it is only 2 player right?

i like D.S.S. 🙂

All the board game clubs I've been involved with, people bring their own games. One club collects $2 dues which goes towards the meeting costs (they meet in a mall's meeting room which they get charged for). Basically people show up at the appointed time, form up into groups that want to play a specific game and away they go. It's especially fun when you can get a bigger group to play a party game like Time's Up, but usually we have 3-4 different games running at once.

How big do you want this group to get? Is it just amongst friends? Where are you going to host the meetings? Are you sure you only want to go once per month? I would host twice a month, or every other week on the same day. Like every other Friday. That way people are more likely to remember. I would form a sign-up list, and then talk about dues at the first meeting. See what games people already own. I would have games like Risk as stand-bys. Stratego, Chess, Checkers, etc should be available for those who drop out of the main game early. You'll want multiple copies of your main game if the group gets bigger.

$5 dues isn't much to ask. Once you build a selection of games, you can use the dues to provide soda for everyone. Let people bring snacks. However, there will always be moochers. Visitors to the group can play their first night for free, and if they want to come back start collecting dues.
