My fiancee has this cute little obsession with board games. She loves trivial pursuit, sorry, life, clue, and yes even chutes and ladders and candyland. I'm looking to buy her a couple for her b-day coming up. I'm looking for some good suggestions - new or classic!

My personal favorite was always aggravation.

Apples to Apples is the best party game I have played in years.

Other favorites:
Taboo
Scatagories
Catch Phrase

Boggle FTW! I've loved that game ever since I've learned to read. :)

One of my favs too! We use to play in a little coffee shop and she'd get so frustrated... lol. She wasn't half bad though.

Apples to Apples is fun and easy.

In the strategy department (my favorites)...
Chess is the best (Go is a fun alternative but more difficult).
Carcazone is great and very simple (girls tend to like this one)
Settlers of Catan is great (unlike the above poster, I think 4 players is best, but it's much improved with the Cities and Knights expansion)
Risk (classic)
Axis and Allies
Diplomacy

Edit:
Trivial Pursuit is also great.
Who Wants to Be A Millionare actually converted well to a board game and makes a great alternate trivia game.

when the earth was created, the battle between who would rule the land, man or animal, was decided by the worlds greatest board game. it is rumored that deep down below the earths core a secret society assumes the role of judge, jury and executioner when deciding the fate of its elite members with the same board game. peace has been broken and mended again all thanks to this particular board game. in future wars between heaven and hell it is said that a truce can only be resolved by the outcome of this game. what is this game that seperates the weak from the strong might you ask? the game is none other than hungry hungry hippos.

Scotland Yard was fun, too, but it requires 6 people.

221 B Baker Street is fun.

Both are mentally challenging, not mindless games.

Haha kids got so out of control playing that in afterschool that it was permanently in lockup. Everytime it got taken out kids would go beserk again and they'd have to put it back in storage :(
