My BMW Z4 (which is at 100k miles recently) would not start recently. I jumped it and it started, everything was working but the light to the AC and Heater wouldnt turn on, but heat or AC would come out when I adjusted the heater/cooler knob. Although, when I tried to turn up the power of the heater or AC it wouldnt increase, it just blows out lightly.

Everything else works, heat seater, headlights, radio..etc

I drove my car around for 30 mins then I parked it and tried to turn it back on. And it did turn back on.

Anyone have an idea what could be going on ?

Is it the battery? or is it a fuse? I am just hoping its not something big like the starter or spark plugs (that my mechanic told me I needed to replace soon)

Sounds like the computer might need a reset after the jump start.

Supposedly you can disconnect both battery cables at the battery, and touch the ends of the cables together to completely power down the car and the computers. Wait ten minutes and reconnect.

I also read online that if you start the car a different way, it fixes that.

That is, start it backwards of the normal way.

Hold the start button in, and then step on the brake pedal?

All of this is from web posts, so take it with a grain of salt.

just checked a couple of other websites and think i have found the solution. Apparantly the car has gone into "transport mode" meaning the air con and rear heater dont work and blowers work on low level - solution is to take it back to the dealer for them to rest the mode. The car had been standing for a while and drined the battery which caused the problem of the transport mode being activated. Hope this helps anyone else in the future

That web post might be correct.

Thanks LTC8K6, yeah also just read about the transport mode after charging a battery. I think this is the issue.

I was planning on selling it this week too =/

Hopefully I can get it out of transport mode and not have to pay for a new battery too

BMW is using Absorbed Glass Mat batteries. You can not just swap it for a conventional car battery or the car computer will not see it correctly for charging. And if the car battery was just very discharged the dealer may need to reset the computer.

I found a private mechanic who says he can do the job and has done it before. He is charging $70.

So the battery is pretty old and needs to probably replaced. I drove my car around for 30 minutes last night so that helped charge it. I also was going to take it to kragen for a couple hours and charge it some more. Do you guys think that it should run okay for a couple weeks at least. I am planning on selling it this weekend and dont want to buy another battery for it but will definitely let the buyer know the battery needs to be replaced =]

Measure the battery voltage with the hood up 15 minutes after you've removed the key and closed all the doors in the car (so the body control modules turn off). If the battery voltage is like 12.1v, you need to actually CHARGE the battery and not just "boost" it. A low battery can cause electrical issues like you're describing.
