If they can produce a RWD platform with power to match the new Accords/Altimas, at around the same price point, it should sell well.

CEO Helmut Panke said the 1 Series will be nearly identical in size to the 2002 - the predecessor to the 3 Series.

"It will pick up where the 2002 started 35 years ago," he said. "It won't be cheap and will be the only rear-drive car of its size."

AWESOME! I hope it really drives like the older 2002. A simple yet awesome car.

Maybe this will convince Nissan to build a new-age 510 under the Datsun brand.

One can only wish.

Well size is an issue. People who buy Accord/Altima usually want lots of room, something a 1-series won't have.

I have little doubt it will sell well... It's just a BMW that costs 20k, something doesn't seem right with that. I hope it's not a plastic piece of sh!t that dilutes the BMW name. I'm going to have to reserve my final opinions until I see the interior though.

Those FWD POS cars will have NO chance against a RWD BMW...especially if they stick the 2.5 or 3.0L engines in it!

Me wants one!

Edit: so as not to dilute the BMW brand, they could always slap a MINI logo onto it...

A BMW 3-Series is smaller than an Accord/Camry/Altima/6. A 1-Series will even smaller still (about the size of a Civic/Corolla/Sentra). Families by the CamCords b/c they are large, reliable, safe sedans with no drama. They aren't really a "sporting" bunch (3.5SE sales of the Altima are only about 18% of total Altima production).

Your argument really has NO basis.

why doesn't BMW and VW just MERGE and get it over with??

VW Phaeton and now a 1 series??

they should just stay with their strengths and merge.

Bah! I think that will lower the value of a BMW if lots of people buy it, because it could potentially become a common car like a Honda or Toyota.

BMW is out to make money, what you think of their brand name probably doesn't mean much to them.

Same thing with Porsche & the Cayenne.

Face it, being a luxury auto-maker in today's economy isn't the best place to be.
