Costs aside, what would be your preference and why?

I appreciate the info online for the BMW M2 is scant given it hasn't been officially announced, but there is enough to get a fairly rounded view on what to expect.

Hmmm - it would still have to be the M4 for me, but the M2 has definitely piqued my interest. It may be a limited run for the UK based on what I've read, and the word on the street is orders can be placed in November.

EDIT: Interesting article - http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/m...how/2016-bmw-m2-coupé-spotted-latest-pictures

Main car? M3/M4. Secondary fun car? M2. I'm going to wait to see how it pans out, but I'd really like an M2 after it's gone through LCI and maybe a competition package (or whatever they call it) is available. I just want a new light sporty car. A GT4 would really be swell, but that's at least $30k more and even with any M car you already start getting into "should I just get a Vette" territory.

Yeah, 2 series LCI will be mid-late next year I've read (though no-one knows for sure).

The GT4 is a nice car, but as you say, quite pricey - not sure if the cost is justified.

I like smaller cars, so I would go with the M2 over the M4. Seems like the M3/M4 keep getting more bloated every couple of years. 🙂

The recent M4 looks very bloated to me. M2 would be my highest interest car out of their line up currently. May not be the fastest out of that group but im sure it'd be lots of fun

While this isn't the best comparison, the M4 is only 25 lbs more than the M235i with a stick. While one would assume the M2 will be a bit lighter (the M4 is 70 lbs lighter than the 435i). Naturally, depending on how it's concerned, it will be a bit different.

That said, M2 is somewhere around the 52k mark IIRC, so that's a big plus.

While it's pretty much some parts off the 3/4, the motor is a massaged N55. While potentially has...potential in the aftermarket, it's not a 3/4 for sure.

That said, I opted for an M4 as 1) I didn't want to wait, 2) I wanted something with a bit more room should I need it and 3) I can't stand the styling of the 2 series.

The idea behind the M2 is great. Though it needs to be significantly lighter than the M4 to make it the fun and nimble car everyone wants it to be.

M2 with a Dinan tune. It's the same size as an E46 M3, and anything bigger than that is too big, to me.

E46 vs F82 vs F87 (using M235i for now)

Length
4492mm
4671
4432

Width (incl mirrors)
1924
2014
1984

Height
1383
1383
1418

Weight
3415#
3556
3505

Marginal differences. Power to weight, M4 wins...for now. When the final specs of the M2 are released, I'll edit this.

M4. I'd rather have a powerful touring car. I owned a 135i and it was a blast, but I'd think the M4 would be awesome to take on long trips while the 135i was cramped.

And that's the issue. How much will they shave off after they give the M2 the weight reduction treatment the M4 got? Hopefully it's significant or the M2 will just be a "i can't afford an M4" car.

It'll be interesting to see what the official performance figures are - a number of online reports suggest ~370Bhp, but there have also been quotes from BMW reps suggesting 400Bhp is the magic number.

400Bhp will be too close to the M4.

given the weight will be barely different (the M4 has a CF trunk and roof, which the m2 wont have) and the fact the M4 has a much more exclusive engine i think i'd go with the m4.

the speculated base price is only maybe $10k less for a M2, and it won't even come with the sport buckets standard based on leaked options sheets (the m4 has it standard).

granted the m2 comes with 19" wheel standard, and the M4 doesnt. I've sat in a friends M3 and those seats are something you want, and the wheels its just whatever. plus given the cars will probably weigh about the same, basically use the same suspension and really a m4 is only slightly bigger, for barely more money i think i'd just want that "M specific" engine (instead of a really tuned N55 , the M2 basically has a slightly more powerful engine than the z4 sdrive35i variant of the n55),
and the larger set of M specific things the M4 has over the M2. plus you can't get LED headlights on the M2

I haven't actually driven an F8x M car and obviously not a a M2, but i've driven a 328/228 and 428. and honestly the 2 feels A LITTLE smaller, and its mostly since its not as long.
