BMW Bringing back 8-series!

Thankfully MBZ has that market covered with the CL65 & CL63.

Simple ECU reflash on those has them running high 10's last I remember.

Zanily enough, this April Fools is inspired by the 1990 Prototype M8 🙂

http://sportscarforums.com/f9/bmw-m8-13881.html

The motor went on to be used in the Mclaren F1.

~550bhp in 1990 (!!)

Wonder if the prototype has been destroyed yet, it would be awesome if some nutty rich guy from Dubai ordered it to be duplicated. Makes you think, with today's technology (nearly 20 years later), what BMW could churn out in an M8 type of car if they wanted to.

EDIT :

Looks like BMW is looking into a semi-successor?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_CS_Concept

'Production likely to begin in 2010'

Hmmmmm.....

Love the 8 series! Beautiful cars and destined to be a classic. 8 series and the NSX are the only two vehicles I want from the 90s. Everytime a thread or a mention about the 8, I get all excited and search the listings on Autotrader. Prices are very reasonable and if I had the garage space, I would be so tempted to buy one right now.

I love the 850CSi, but I also own a 3rd gen Supra, and the styling similarity is pretty apparent 🙂

The "official" story from BMW is that the M8 prototype has been destroyed. However, rumor has it that it is sitting in a warehouse somewhere in Germany. I've read that BMW doesn't want to put it in their museum, due to the lack of finish (apparently the M8 proto was very rough).

I'd love to see the 8 series come back, as long as they don't f it up (which I don't think they will). If they do bring it back, I hope it's not as much of a financial disaster for them as the first one was. Apparently they lost their ass on it 😱

Yeah so silly that they canned the project when it was getting near completion. McLaren sure made good use of that engine that they made though 😉 So not a total loss. I still can't get over the 550hp figure for 1990. I mean, even the awesome ZR-1 Vette didn't have that, the Viper was still a pipe dream/concept, and most cars had peaked in the 200-300hp range.

To put it in perspective, now 18 years later, if they released a new M8 (based on the new CS concept) with the same 550hp power, it would be enough to be taken seriously. That's just incredible. I expect ~600hp though, if they want to shine next to the already excellent MB CLS AMG.

No argument there, that engine was / is truly awesome 🙂 The mid-90's 850 CSI (which some people think of as the "production M8" had a twin-turbo V12 which "only" made 371 hp, IIRC. Still not a sports car, as these cars are kind of porky (~4100 lbs) but the CSIs moved pretty good. 😀 I'd still love to have an 850 CSI one day, although a nice one will still run you $30 - 50K.

Wikipedia says that the McLaren engine was NOT the same unit as the M8, which Gordon Murray rejected as too long and too heavy. The F1 engine was a new design. So not everyone on the internet agrees with our AT posters. 😉

Ah, it's been corrected then :

In earlier Wiki posts (maybe as recently as a few days ago, thinking back), the BMW S70 Motor was listed as being the motor design used for the McLaren F1.

At 550Bhp, it certainly had the power for it 🙂 But who knows on the weight, etc. Wiki says the final motor was closer to a later S50B30 series.

O well :

McLaren F1 rocks
BMW 8-series was cool
They shoulda built teh M8

and

They should bring them back!

2009 McLaren F1
2010 BMW M8

Yeah 😀

I replaced a propshaft on an 850csi when I was 16, then went out for a test drive with my mentor afterwards.

I also remember replacing all the sparkplugs on that car as well.

Good times. Crap wage, though.
