I don't know much about the BMW system, but the Toyota system was available as a $2000 upgrade on the 2nd-gen Prius. If I had to guess, it was probably decided that such a costly upgrade would not sell well, and Americans would not find it all that useful since our streets are not as crowded as those in Tokyo or major European cities.
 
This sytem would never work in Manhattan where some spots are so tight you have to hit some curb and bumpers to get in.
 
While I'm perfectly capable of parallel parking, something like this would be nice. I wouldn't pay $2k for it for the rare occasion I would need it though.

Yeah, I noticed that on the Toyota demo, the space was ENORMOUS. Less so on this demo, but it's still not very challenging. Now, parking with inches to spare on each side, where you have to make multiple back-and-forth movements to get in all the way...
