Wow, seems like whoever owned it kept it in pristine condition...or someone spent a boatload of money cleaning and restoring it.

You don't see anything wrong with buying an 11 year old car for $14000+?

And its not that rare. Just unpopular. Especially the v12 versions. You want a classic toy, an icon? Get a viper. Parts are probably cheaper too.

If you keep up on maint. it's pretty easy to take most BMWs to 200k or beyond with the original engine. I can't say the same for the auto transmissions though. The manuals always last a long time(made by GetGrag), but for a time in the mid 90s they were using GM auto transmissions. Lots of problems with those.

Edit: Of course the problem with BMWs is that maint. is expensive. That's my most enthusiasts refer to it as Break My Wallet.

<- My wallet is broken, I don't have enough to finish my e21 project with an m42 swap. Not enough time, not enough money.

From the day that model was introduced, I always wanted an 8 series. I dont really prefer BMW otherwise.

Ive owned Porsche and drive a Mercedes. Better have deep pockets, thats all I got to say. Theres not much on that car that doesnt run $500-$1000 to fix or replace.

if I had the money and this wasn't my primary car and I was a huge 8 series bmw fan I would buy it since it's in such good condition.

There is a nicer 851i v12 sitting for sale in this import shop over here for about the same price or cheaper.

I heard that if you use the wrong oil you will wreck the engine. BMW requires some odd ball wieght and visconsity that cannot be found at your local Wal-Mart or auto parts store.

the engines themselves are durable but the rest of the car is not particularly durable

a coworker of mine has a 740i of same year, i believe same powertrain as 840i, the stereo makes strange noises, some of the console displays are crapping out, the rubber trim/door sealing is rotting, airbag light is on and o2 sensors are crapping out causing CEL. Nothing too unusual for an old car, but because it's a BMW it costs more money to fix.

another friend of mine has a 2000 740i (same drivetrain again) and his transmission broke at around 80K miles, needing a replacement which cost him 3K, and he considers that a relative bargain since other places qouted him 5K+. He drives only BMWs but then he complains left and right that parts are hard to find and rape him in cost when he can find them.

Sweet cars. They are prone to a few high-tech issues, and like all BMW's tend to be fairly maintenance intensive, but what a blast to drive...I've driven a couple of the 850 CSi9's (12 cyl. version of that one) WAHOO!
I don't remember if they had the Nikasil engine or had schanged to the Alusil engine by 95. MANY of the early 4.0 v-8's had the Alusil engine, which was a POS. MOST were replaced by the factory, but there are still some floating around. Do your research BEFORE buying it.

Here's the Roadfly forum for the 8 series:

Incorrect. Mine have run on 20W50 for many years. Granted, in colder climates, you'd change to a lower viscosity for winter, but that's all...Otherwise, just use a good quality oil. Many BMW owners use Mobil 1 year around...

If you own a BMW, why would you buy your oil at walmart?
