Watch this video from 2:56 onward.

With a market gap in the big performance car segment I think BMW has the motive to bring the big bad 8 back and maybe tuck the 6 series in for a while, and boy do I hope they do :D

Your thoughts?

Exactly how well did the 8 series sell in the 90s? It didn't exactly do very well did it?

I think it would be nice but I'm not sure how well it would work.

You're right, the 8 was a huge money loser for BMW in the '90s. It is one car they'd very much like to forget about. Which is why it surprises me a little to see them thinking about bringing it back.

It came out in 1991 in the US - right before the market in the performance GT category tanked in the mid / late '90s. There was no demand for a $90k gas-guzzling coupe anymore, as the trend shifted to being "green".

BTW, the 850CSI was basically the M8 in everything but badging :) It came with a twin-turbo V12 (372 bhp / 402 lb-ft) from the factory! :Q These numbers aren't really impressive today, but it was certainly something for 1994 when the CSI came out!

There was a single "real" M8 produced as a concept, but the project was scrapped. BMW figured there was no market for a car like that. Rumor has it that the original prototype is still sitting somewhere in Germany under lockdown.

"One of BMWs best kept secrets is the canceled M8. Originally envisioned as a Ferrari killer, only a single prototype was ever produced, equipped with a special 550 bhp (410 kW) version of the S70 engine displacing approx. 6 L, this engine was later developed into the engine fit into the McLaren F1. Details about the car are nonexistent except, the project was eventually scrapped because BMW have decided that a market for such a car as the M8 did not exist. The only prototype ever produced (one that was reportedly not even road safe) was locked away by BMW in their Giftschrank (poison storage) and has reportedly been destroyed." From Wikipedia

I'm not a true car lover, but I always loved the 8 series. I'd love to even own one now if I could afford the maintenance bills.

Reportedly been destroyed. :) Of course, it's possible (and maybe likely) that it has been, but I've also heard rumors that it hasn't. BMW is pretty tight-lipped about it - people have emailed inquiring about it and couldn't really get a straight answer from them.

One of the quirky things about that M8 prototype was that they removed the flip-open headlights completely, and integrated the headlights instead into the front light bar where the turn signals, fogs, and FTP highbeams are. This cut down weight considerably, and opened up a lot of space in the engine compartment for go-fast goodies. Problem was, the light bar in front was too low to the ground for the headlights to be placed in it. The car wouldn't pass safety regs in many countries with that type of light setup. Kind of a shame, that would have been cool. ;)

What I couldn't understand is why does BMW have this animosity towards their bastard child the only true M8? Why wasn't the only true M8 placed in the BMW museum? What is so top secret about it? Or was all of this done for buzz generation?

The story I've heard (not sure how much truth there is to this) is that the car was kind of slopped together, and not really refined enough to look good in a museum. Although I think it should be in one anyway.

It reminds me of a Mercedes CLS, and WTF is up with those crappy guages. I've seen domestics with better guages than that. BMW's orange/red guages are really nice, they should just use those.

Wow, that announcer is awful. Is the show produced by first-year journalism students at a community college or what?

I found where I saw the other pics of the red one....

Scroll down ~ 1/5 of the way

Not sure which is closer to the production version though...I'm thinking the red one. And my comment about the front end stands. Ugh. :frown:

EDIT: Bonus = there's TONS of reading material about the CS on that page also.

Agreed. I've always liked the lines on the big German cars and the regular BMW gauges ARE among the nicest on any car, IMO.
