BMW 3 series 318d or 1 series 118d M Sport?

I am deciding wheather to get the 3 Series 318D sport 4dr or the 1 Series 118d M Sport 5dr.

Pros and cons for both?
Which car is better overal? etc etc etc
I am planning to buy a 2016 reg.

The only material difference is car size, so work out whether you need a bigger car or not, lol.

The size difference isn't all that big between the 1 series and 3 series and since you're looking at a hatch, the 1 probably actually has more cargo room.

The 1 series are bit lighter and thus more nimble than 3's; and 3's correspondingly "smoother" aka slower reacting, along with slightly more lux feel commensurate with the price.

If you want gadets then find the used one with the highest spec that fits your budget. I would think the 3 series would drive more smoothly.

I can't speak the newer F series, but I can tell you on the E's, the 3 series interior is definitely nicer than the 1 series.

Had a 2013(?) 118d Auto as a company car - and it was pretty horrid. Heavy, sluggish and in no way premium. Until I had to service it and got slapped with 1500 euros because it needed new brakes all around. This was after less than two years, and barely 40k miles... I just drove it to work and back.


With anything BMW: the options matter most. Another company 118d manual didn't even have climate control or bluetooth audio (only phone). Make sure you've got the options you want, and deep pockets for maintenance/repairs.

I found both the 100's and the 300's to be too damn small.
And the 500's are too damn expensive.
