BMP image (picture) too big for E-mail sending

I just bought a scanner so I could send pictures to friends and family via E-mail but the BMP file that gets created is about 6 meg and that's too big to send. Is there a program that will cut down the size of BMP files so that you can attach and send them through E-mail?

Open it up in a Graphics Program (I am sure that one would be supplied with tyou scanner, or even open it up in Paint) and under export or save, select *.JPG or *.GIF depenging on how many colours you require
