BM6 voltage question re: Celeron2

i have a bm6 with a celeron 400, and was thinking about upgrading to a celeron 2. if i remember correctly, the old celerons ran at 2.2 volts or something like that, but i hear the celeron 2s run at a much lower voltage. will a new celeron 2 run on my bm6? i can't just look in the bios because it's not my primary system any more, so it's in pieces in my closet.

Yes, you can use a celeron2 on your bm6. Make sure you upgrade your bios to the TZnewest available It is supposed to fix some sort of keyboard LED issue. It will also contain the updated voltage info for the Cel2. The down side is if you want to overclock your new cel2, the max voltage you can put to it is 1.7 volts. Hopefully, abit will release a version with more voltage options...soon.

I'm getting ready to try a 566 @ 850 (the parts are currently in the mail). If you're interested, I can keep you posted. My results should be sometime this weekend.

After reading Sesopedalian's post, maybe the voltage issue is not such a problem. 1.6v is not going to have any significant negative effects on a celeron2. Perhaps you then can adjust up from there, you should have the voltage needed to overclock, if that is your intention. The question is whether Sesopedalian adjusts the clock multiplier with the bios or some third party software. I wasn't aware that the HL bios had the option to adjust the clock multiplier to 9 in the bios.

I have the QT bios, which was released prior to the TZ. QT has support for the 566 and 600 cpu's. When I set the bios to 566, it sets default voltage to 1.5v. When I set the clock multiplier to user define and 8.5, it sets the default voltage to 1.5v - then I can adjust up to 1.7v from there, no higher. With my 466 celeron in the MB, the default voltage is defaulted to 2.2v.

My hope is that when abit releases a bios to support the celeron2 766, they will give more voltage options above the 1.5v - 1.7v range.

My retail celeron 566 came in the mail today and the results are in:

celeron2 retail 566 @ 850 1.6v - tested in Win98SE and a few hours of single player Q3A
Golden orb with arctic silver
Abit bm6 with the QT bios update

I spent $90.95 for the cpu - no adapters needed to fit the cpu into the bm6
$12.50 for the GOrb
$13.95 for the arctic silver
hmmm, $117.40, that's all shipping and tax included and all while avoiding an upgrade to a new mb

The only down side is now I have a perfectly good celeron 466 (which I was running at 525) in a drawer.
