Bluetooth backward compatibility?

I have a Jabra Play wireless headset device that I bought in August 2013 which is Bluetooth 3.0. It pairs and works fine with an iPhone 4 which has BT 2.1. However, it does not work with (is not found by) my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact which is BT 4.0, nor an iPhone SE which is BT 4.2.

From what I've read on google searches Bluetooth is supposed to be backward compatible, like USB. i.e. You can plug in a USB3 device into a USB2 port and it will operate, but within the restrictions of the older USB standard's speed/power/etc.

e.g. "Bluetooth 4.0 is backward-compatible with all other versions of Bluetooth, so you can pair existing Bluetooth headsets with the new iPhone without a problem." (In the context of a then-new iPhone 4S which was BT 4.)

Is there some way to get the Jabra Play to play with newer Bluetooth versions, or am I S.O.L.?

This isn't a bluetooth version compatibility problem, but rather a hardware compatibility problem. For some reason, and it pretty much comes down to the bluetooth chipsets used on both sides, one refuses to see the other.

Unfortunately bluetooth doesn't really have a control panel to trouble shoot. If the problem is the jabra you have no more then the usual on/off/pair options to work with.

Thanks. I suspect that either the Jabra and/or the phones might be just little bit off the Bluetooth spec. The Sony phone has been a lemon since day 1 (actually day #9 when it powered down permanently) so I wasn't surprised when it wouldn't pair with the Jabra, but I was disappointed that the iPhone SE wouldn't. Oh, well.

Maybe I'll just re-purpose the iPhone 4 as a glorified iPod for use around the house (or travel) where I can wander around untethered with ear buds in place.

I was able to pair the Jabra with my new Samsung TV *once* but cannot get it to connect again. TV shows it connected, the blue light is illuminated on the Jabra, but no sound. For me Bluetooth has been more of an art than a science. :\
