bluetooth and phone problem. T610 & Hawking USB Adapter

Products:
1) Ericsson T610 phone through t-mobile
2) Hawking Technology H-BT10U USB bluetooth adapter for my computer
3) Jabra bluetooth wireless headset (works find with phone)
4) Computer running win xp. Plenty of other goodies, this is still a semi-newly built computer.

Problem description:
I am able to 'find' my computer by searching for devices through my phone. However, going in reverse creates a bit of a headache (can't find my phone through my computer). I'm constantly plagued with the message "no local bluetooth device was detected" when attempting to search through my bluetooth neighborhood or when trying to search for new devices.

What I've done:
1) I downloaded the latest USB software/drivers and installed them before plugging in the actual adapter.
2) I manage to get a partial link between the devices--My phone is able to search a single shared directory in the bluetooth directory on my computer. Also, the 2 "services" listed in my phone for my computer are "headset and file transfer"
3) I've tried various usb ports

Hypotheses:
1) my bluetooth adapter is broken
2) the drivers for the adapter suck and don't work within XP
3) My phone somehow broke some of its services and no longer work (computer connectivity worked when my brother had the phone)

I'm open for any suggestions! I should have been wary of Amazon's ranking of this product when it came to difficult installation. Thanks!
