I have a cheap soundbar that I want to connect to via bluetooth. I have a blackberry stereo gateway, which was manufactured in 2008, that I connected to the speaker and it works. My question is, would the audio sound better using a receiver with updated bluetooth standards? My Nexus 5x has the latest bluetooth, and I'd imagine the blackberry stereo gateway is on some arcane version of bluetooth. Would something like this improve audio quality?

I would consider a Chromecast Audio instead. Once you get used to wifi streaming the distance requirements of bluetooth are a pain. It is nice to just keep your phone in your pocket.

chromecast audio has its own issues, namely requiring a private network.

And compatible apps. It isn't a homerun for everyone, but if you have a local network (most people do in their homes) and you have compatible apps (many are) then it gives you a rock solid connection and sound quality. Worth considering maybe.

nope. The only updates after 2.0 brought the ability to pass controls, and information like remaining battery life, all of that was in 3.x.
