my local supermarket has a 1/2 price sale on blueberries:
$2/pint instead of $4

so I washed a handful and ate them.

didn't taste as blueberrily as the breakfast stuff in the freezer isle.

artificial flavors FTW?
(how about artificial flavored real blueberries?)

Probably because real blueberries contain so much unnecessary byproduct, which can be avoided when you're going for blueberry flavored.

But, I agree, the classical "blueberry flavor" is quite difference from the taste of raw blueberries. Probably closer to what you get from processed (cooked, baked, etc) blueberries, where some of the sour components are neutralized.

sour

Real picked blueberries that are sour or taste like byproduct were picked at the wrong time and not given a chance to mature properly on the bush. Blueberries picked at peak of ripeness and sweetness are unbelievable.

Depending on where you are located, take some time to find a farm or grower in your area. You can go pick berries yourself which makes for a fun family activity. Or buy them from the farm. Local farm like this dont have to pick the berries early to make them survive a long voyage to market. Local farms IMO have the best flavor.

This shouldn't be surprising. Blueberries are not naturally very sweet. When you get something "blueberry flavored" it has the essence of blueberry and a lot of sugar.

Farmers' market for the win.

Most berry/fruit/melon-flavored foods don't actually taste like the berry/fruit/melon that they're flavored after, do they?

I used to think it was so funny growing up that I loved grapes but hated grape-flavored stuff, but loved cherry-flavored stuff and hated actual cherries. It doesn't take much to amuse me. lol

Same with strawberries, etc. But that just means one needs to eat more to appreciate them and their value. Flavor alone without other discretions should never be the reason for eating something, particularly in this age of chemical warfare on our food supply.

This. Some of my favorite days are spent in blueberry fields, picking blueberries. (Plus I have close to a dozen blueberry bushes at home). I leave those fields completely satiated from fresh ripe blueberries. Planning on picking about 100 pounds this year; less than a month away. :) (Gotta do 12 gallons of wine this year; 6 gallons is clearly not enough - it was very popular.)

<vomit> This is something I cannot understand. The artificial flavored fruits taste NOTHING like they are supposed to taste.

I love cherries but the cherry flavored candy or cough medicine is repugnant to me. I just cannot see the similarities. It tastes nothing like real cherries at all. same with grape flavored things too.

I like the way artificial lime tastes. It is the closest I can get to pinesol and I love that smell.

Your blueberry flavoring probably has sugar or some other artificial sweetener added to it and that's why it tastes better to you. Personally, I love fresh blueberries and I buy them when they are in season and put them on my cereal in the morning.

Nothing better than fresh blueberries.

That's what I was getting at, they taste nothing like the berry they're named for. My tastes have changed in between then and now, though, and I love fresh cherries now. I don't like them with all the syrupy sweet crap you get when you buy them in a jar in the store, only fresh cherries. I still don't like grape flavored candy or soda, though. Today, the only fruit I don't like is pineapple, I love any other fruits or melons or berries. The only reason I don't like pineapple is the texture of it.

I have about 8 different types of blueberries in my back yard and they blow away anything at the store, but that's how it is with anything I guess.

Go with wild instead of farmed. Smaller, but have way more punch.

Frozen aren't necessarily evil, either.

wild blueberries for the win. We pick 18-40 quarts a year for use in jams and pies. store bought blueberries or even fresh picked farm blueberries cannot match.

Have to agree. I was hiking one day and accidentally discovered a raspberry grove. I didn't get to finish my hike because I went back to my house to get some containers. The grove kept on going and going, I had no idea how huge it was. It took me hours to pick them all and ended up with about 10 POUNDS of raspberries. I was giving away raspberries, canned raspberry preserves, made raspberry icecream and macerated a bunch of raspberries in 100 proof vodka in a huge container. Maybe I went a little overboard :p
